The Parthenon, dedicated to Athena, at the Acropolis, has miraculously withstood time for almost 2,500 years; its Doric architecture has survived multiple conflicts that resulted in it being blown up, looted, and reconstructed into different religious temples.

Despite many of its buildings having been lost to time and to Sulla’s sacking of Athens in 86 BCE, the Lyceum—unearthed in 1996—stands as a relic of its philosophical past as Aristotle's school of philosophy.

The Panathenaic Stadium preserves nearly 2,500 years of Athenian history.
During the Panathenaia, Athenians honored Athena here with races, boxing, and the pentathlon, awarding victors sacred olive oil tied to Athena’s mythic contest with Poseidon.

Did you know Aegina once rivalled Athens as a trading centre before Athens conquered it in 459/458 BCE?
Today, Aegina’s Temple of Apollo stands as a lone column visible from its port—a trace of the hill’s prehistoric, Classical, and Byzantine lives.

Did you know? Athenian myth says Mount Lycabettus was born from Athena’s rage: after hearing Cecrops’ daughters opened the forbidden box holding Erichthonius, she dropped the limestone peak she was carrying. Today, its summit offers rare quiet above Athens.

Overlooking Athens atop the Acropolis is the Parthenon which has gone through much destruction, reconstruction, and reuse since the 5th C. BCE and is now partially restored. Next to it stands the uniquely shaped Erechtheion, the copies of the Caryatids acting as columns.

Below the Acropolis Museum lie the excavations of a neighbourhood that was occupied from c. 3500 BCE until the 14th C. CE. Visible remains include Roman structures: dwellings, baths, and public latrines. This resulted in many cisterns and water systems found here.

The Acropolis Museum displays the artifacts found on the nearby Acropolis and its slopes. The most notable include the marble blocks with friezes from the Parthenon and the Caryatids from the Erechtheion. These are housed inside for protection from the elements. #acropolismuseum

Hadrian’s Library was built in the 2nd C. CE under the emperor and consisted of the main library area to the east of a peristyle courtyard that housed 40 niches for holding papyrus books. In the 5th C, a tetraconch church was built in the court, leaving surviving mosaic floors.
