Alexi, I think you’re missing the point. It is either the USA wants to compete with the rest of the football world, or it doesn’t.

The problem is not a lack of talent. As a diverse country, there is tons of talent, especially among the immigrant community who originate from football-strong cultures.

Rather than go at each other, the real question should be what is the US not doing right with all the money and youth clubs. I am a soccer dad - and I assume you probably are, too - so I know how much I invest in my kids’ soccer journey. And that is probably way less than most parents do.

Yet, for all of the ECNL, NPL, EDP, high school, college soccer, etc, the USA consistently fails to compete against countries with even less of a soccer footprint than those.

WHY????

Is there too much arrogance in the US Soccer community to look elsewhere and see what is being done right and find a way to integrate that, or at least the elements that lead to success?

Brazil, France, Spain, Germany, England, Argentina are all competing at a high level. Why are they so successful? Norway has recently joined. Try to read the piece on what Norway did to change things by establishing the NTS in 2013. Now see where they are.

France were in the same boat until they started Clairefontaine in 1988. Ten years after, they were World Champions. Morocco have moved from nobodies to one WC semifinal and two quarterfinals in a row because they invested in their own version. England, the home of football, actually humbled themselves and went to study the French model

Again, the question is, what is the USA doing wrong and how can that be fixed. The current model obviously isn’t working, hasn’t been for years.

One thing is for certain, even with all the private clubs in these countries, the government is still pouring in money to develop the sport. And it will cost a very small fraction of what is being spent in places I will not mention so as to keep this strictly about sport.

Here’s my reiterated thought. Let’s ask the right questions, try to get close to the right answers as possible, and look to those with success to learn why and how that will work in the States. Just outright dismissing all suggestions is not the way to go.

Unless, of course, the USA doesn’t really care that much about football, anyway. Then you can come back and have this tiresome discussion again in four years
