I looked up from the food I was serving. “You knew it was my birthday?”

He watched me for a moment before sitting down.

But somewhere along the way, I got tired of asking.

He shook his head.

“I bought myself a cake, took pictures, and came home. When you asked why I didn't tell you it was my birthday, I reminded you that I'd mentioned it three times that week.”

He looked down at his plate.

“And the year before that?” I continued. “You promised to take me out, but your friends invited you to watch football. You told me we'd go the following weekend. We never did.”

“Babe, I know I've made mistakes.”

“I know. But do you know what hurts? I used to get excited about doing things with you. Now, when something makes me happy, I don't even think to tell you anymore.”

He was quiet for a long time.

Then he asked, “Have you stopped loving me?”

That question nearly broke me.

“No, Daniel. I'm just tired of feeling lonely in a marriage where I have a husband.”

He pushed his chair back and came to sit beside me.

For the first time in a long time, he didn't defend himself. He just held my hand.

“Tell me how to fix it.”

I rested my head on his shoulder.

“Don't make me write you a manual on how to love your wife. Just start noticing me again.”

That night, we talked until almost 2 a.m.

He didn't suddenly become a perfect husband. But the next morning, he brought me tea in bed and asked what I wanted us to do that weekend.

It was a small thing.
