Loved the debate on dogs @novaramedia however, there are so many other points to be made. As someone who has worked with banned breeds (albeit in the USA), and have trained rescue, disaster, service dogs and city dogs, ALL dogs (especially big dogs) have the ability to hurt.
Also loved @AshSarkaronBBC story about her relatives dog breaking someone’s leg. I know multiple people this has happened to from frenchies, labradors, spaniels, etc. and I had a client once break themself trippin ovr a basset hound 🤦♀️ . Dogs lol
Or sliding scale/free dog training like
Myself and others offer so that the doubt isn’t even in the publics hands? “We know most dogs are trained” vs what I sadly see as a trainer “most people don’t train their dogs”. Food for thought?
The U.K. is one of the few countries that allow dogs off lead in nearly all areas. However as @AshSarkaronBBC pointed out, how does Joe Public know the difference between a well trained Fido and one that won’t recall? Training.Surely council run dog training should be available?
I think breeders should be more accountable with councils failing many people with the “supposed” compolsary licensing, @TheKennelClubUK registering litters without ever seeing them or proof of breeding. The discussion is much bigger
& on the same hand, I have trained assistance dogs and service dogs in the who were pitbulls and highly trained. Every few years, the https://t.co/EEpDugOMli goes through the notions of vilifying a breed. It’s been 🇩🇪 shepherds, mali, Doberman, mastiffs, etc just in my lifetime
Also rather than going down the thinking of registering dogs over a certain weight (which I have seen in other countries, states, and housing boards) results in housing issues and discrimination esp with POC, the issue of bad breeders was not touched on heavily enough
Banning certain breeds doesn’t prevent them existing, they just go underground and only good dog owners suffer. We have had a pitbull ban here for a long time, but I still see them out and about in areas of London, or people call me not realising they had purchased one as a pup
