ICYMI: Earlier this week we announced our "Cradle-to-Career" educational plan for the return to local management of the Providence Public Schools. This is an important moment for not only our City, but also our children, families and communities.

With the first day of school coming up, we have an opportunity to build on the progress we've made, and strengthen the work happening across Providence Public Schools, the Providence School Board, City government, higher education institutions, employers and community partners. By working together, we will continue to ensure every child in our city has the tools and pathways they need to succeed from their classroom to their future career.

This morning we reopened the Davey Lopes Recreation Center, marking another significant milestone for not only the City of Providence but for the community and neighborhood it is located in. With this funding we established a new Community Learning Center, inclusive of a fully renovated computer lab, new multipurpose rooms, ADA-compliant bathrooms, sprinklers and decarbonization improvements. And for the first time, all of our recreation centers will have air conditioning by the end of this summer.

These investments represent not only a newly renovated space, but investment in our neighbors, children, families and community as it is a welcoming place for people to grow, learn, play, and gather for generations to come.

Our Climate Justice Plan includes seven key sections, 20+ targets and over 50 strategies aimed at creating an equitable, low-carbon and climate resilient city. We will be highlighting one each week, starting with Lead by Example!

🏙️ We've prioritized the elimination of fossil fuels from municipal buildings by 2040 and developed a Decarbonization Roadmap to guide us.

♻️ The City's first-ever Green Revolving Fund was signed into law by Mayor Smiley, creating dedicated funding for renewable energy initiatives to better prepare Providence for the climate crisis.

🏢 Our Building Energy Reporting Ordinance (BERO) requires buildings to report their energy usage. The data is used to provide the public and property owners with energy consumption information to help understand how it compares to similar buildings. The goal is to help advance investments in energy efficiency that save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Deadline to register or change party for the September 9 primary is Monday, August 10. Providence residents can pick up and drop off voter registration forms at the Providence Public Safety Complex from August 8–10, 8:30 am–4:00 pm.

Tonight, we celebrated the City's annual Pops in the Park by the Rhode Island Philharmonic! This free event is always a great night to celebrate community and music at the iconic Roger Williams Park Temple to Music.

This event was a collaboration between the City of Providence and our community partners - the Rhode Island Foundation, Washington Trust, Providence ACT, Parks Department, Roger Williams Park and KLR.

In anticipation of the upcoming closure of the Olneyville library, my team and I collaborated with the Community Libraries of Providence to ensure this neighborhood does not go without library resources. Later this year, the newly renovated Joslin Recreation Center will be home to critically needed library services. Investing in our libraries is a direct investment in our neighborhoods and in the people who call Providence home.  

We’re grateful to the Community Libraries of Providence and all of our community partners who have made this project possible. Together, we’re building a Providence where every neighbor, regardless of their zip code, has access to the high-quality recreational spaces and resources they deserve.

This year's event will feature outstanding overtures - favorites from theater, film and classical music. The Rhode Island Foundation is the presenting sponsor of this free event which is open to the public with food trucks on-site.

Since taking office, prioritizing initiatives and investments that build a more climate resilient city has been one of our top priorities. Providence is seeing the deep impacts of climate change and as we experience extreme weather events like heavy rain and potential flooding, we reflect on the importance of this work, and the work still to be done.
