Sometimes, a simple idea can carry a profound story.
While scrolling through Instagram, I came across Kaaka’s Garden, a diffuser by @KarobwaScents. It immediately caught my attention because Kaaka is the Rukiga word for grandmother, and at @CivsourceAfrica, together with @GivingTueAfrica, we are collecting stories of the generosity of African grandmothers through our #GoGrandma campaign.
I was delighted to sit down with Joan, one of Karobwa Scents’ co-founders, to hear the inspiration behind Kaaka’s Garden.
It was a beautiful reminder that our grandmothers continue to live on in the values they taught us, the memories they gave us, and sometimes, even in a fragrance.
Let’s celebrate them.

✍🏾At the close of our second quarter, learning took us beyond the meeting room and into practice.
We visited a poultry project established by our colleague Ivan offering us a powerful glimpse into what financial resilience can look like.🐓🌱
Thank you Ivan for hosting us. 🙌🏾
🌍 We are back!
Following our mid-year break, the CivSource Africa team returns rested, re-energised and ready to continue supporting the people, ideas and institutions shaping philanthropy across Africa. 🤝🏾
Here is to a purposeful second half of the year. 🌱

Gratitude Multiplied
A few weeks ago, I received a call from my mom.
“Jackie, there’s something on my heart. @worship_harvest has been so good to us. I feel we should host them so that we can thank them.”
So we got to planning.
Yesterday, my parents welcomed the church leadership into their home for an evening of fellowship and a meal. It was their way of saying, “Thank you.”
As we used to do when Dad was still in active ministry, our family lined up to receive our guests.
Then came the surprise.
After greeting us, everyone returned to their cars.
Moments later, they began walking back. Each person was carrying a gift. Box after box. Basket after basket. Some were so heavy they had to be carried by two people.
“What is this?!” was all my siblings, my parents, and I could say as we stood there in complete disbelief.
There is something profoundly beautiful about setting out to honor others, only to find yourself being honored in return.
Yesterday, my parents experienced exactly that.
We were completely undone.
Apostle @mosesmukisa, Pastor Ary, and the entire pastoral team of Worship Harvest, thank you.
Thank you for loving my parents. Thank you for honoring them. Thank you for faithfully walking with them over the years. Thank you for responding so generously to their invitation.
Yesterday reminded me that gratitude has a beautiful way of multiplying.
When it is offered freely, it is often returned abundantly.
My parents set out to say, “Thank you.”
What they received in return was an overwhelming expression of love, generosity, and honor.
Mwebale nnyo, nnyo, nnyo.
May God continue to bless you, increase you, and use you to be a blessing to many more.

The everyday acts of care and kindness that build our communities rarely make the headlines. If we don't tell these stories, who will?

One of my deepest honors this year has been meeting Mukaaka Aida.
I met her during a visit with grandmothers who work with/are part of @NyakaGlobal
That day had been a busy day as we did both home visits and group discussions with grandmothers.
The team was tired. We were ready to head back to our place of abode, but through the urging of the Grandma Chairperson, we did a final stop at Aida’s home.
After receiving us with the classical enthusiasm that is a hallmark of the Bakiga people, she made a comment that stuck with me long after we left.
In Rukiga she said to us, “My heart was pained. I felt so bad that I was going to miss this opportunity to even give you just a glass of water. My heart was heavy.”
And that for me encapsulates what African generosity is about. It’s never been the amount given. It’s always been a matter of the heart. It is truly the heart that gives. And in Grandma Aida’s words, it’s the heart that hurts when we miss an opportunity to give, to extend kindness.
I went away wondering….. in a world that focuses on and glorifies big money and big checks, do our hearts truly hurt when we miss the opportunity to give?
Do we, like Gradma Aida, feel this pain in the depth of our being?
Is our giving for show? Or is it a matter of the heart?
That is the heart of the matter!

What a joy to finally visit Okere City and witness a bold vision translated into action, a community united, and hope reborn.
Okere City is beautiful reminder of what is possible when a community dares to dream together.
Thank you, @OjokOkello_ . I arrived curious. I left deeply inspired.

As we enter a new week, I wish you well. I wish you happiness. I hope you find a reason to dance.
May you find your footing. May you find the support you need. May you find the song that stirs your heart.
And even if you don’t yet know the steps, may you find someone patient enough to teach you, kind enough to walk beside you, and joyful enough to celebrate every bit of progress you make.
I wish you well. I wish you health.
May this be your week to dance.

𝑩𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒇𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒆, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒘𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉 𝒊𝒕 𝒏𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒘.
On the opening evening of the 𝟏𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, three voices read the state of the philanthropy ecosystem as one continuous picture, each one tightening the lens on the last. The view starts at its widest and closes at its most intimate, and by the time it sharpens, it has arrived exactly where you stand.
Everyone walks in holding a fragment of the picture. 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒍𝒌 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒊𝒕.
Sara Lomelin (@sara_lomelin) opens at the widest setting. Founding CEO of Philanthropy Together (@phil_together), a TED main stage speaker and a 2025 TIME100 Philanthropy honoree, she is a leading force behind the global giving-circle movement, and she reads the signals moving through philanthropy across the world, the currents every other conversation at this conference will sit inside.
Dr. Tendai Murisa (@tmurisa) draws the lens to the continent. Founder and Executive Director of @sivioinstitute, former head of TrustAfrica, and author of African Philanthropy: Evolution, Practice and Change, he reads the field as the continent actually lives it.
Jacqueline Asiimwe (@asiimwe4justice) brings it home. A human rights lawyer, founder and CEO of @CivsourceAfrica, and one of the 100 Most Influential African Women, she closes at the most proximate setting of all, the ecosystem seen from inside the region itself.
Three voices, one unbroken conversation. O𝑶𝒏𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏 𝒊𝒕.
The picture comes into focus on the evening of 16 June. 𝓑𝓮 𝓲𝓷 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓻𝓸𝓸𝓶 𝔀𝓱𝓮𝓷 𝓲𝓽 𝓭𝓸𝓮𝓼.🎀
