Upper Canada District School Board and Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario have announced that school buses won’t be running on Thursday. So far schools are expected to remain open, but they note that could change.

As of 4:55 PM, here is the latest list of school closures and bus cancellations for public school boards that we are aware of:

Schools closed:

🟣 Trillium Lakelands District School Board

🟣 Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board

🟣 Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic School Board

Buses cancelled, schools open:

We are closely monitoring the latest updates on the expected geomagnetic storms over the next three days.

The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has just released its latest forecast for the upcoming nights, and it appears the first storm won’t begin until after sunrise tomorrow morning. This means, barring any surprises, we’re unlikely to see the northern lights tonight. However, there’s always a chance the forecast could change, and an unexpected storm might occur.

The good news is that we’re still awaiting the arrival of multiple Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), including one from this morning’s massive X9.0 solar flare and another from Tuesday. This makes Friday and Saturday nights prime candidates for a spectacular aurora display.

Typically, for Northern Ontario, a G1 geomagnetic storm is enough to make the auroras visible. Those in Central and Eastern Ontario might also catch a faint glimpse during a G1 storm. For Southern Ontario, auroras will start to show up on camera around G2-G3, and they can be seen with the naked eye at G3-G4, depending on how far north you are. Once we hit G4-G5 levels, the northern lights can be seen vividly across most of Southern Ontario, even without a camera.

Although the SWPC forecast may still change, we’re currently expecting a G1 storm to begin around sunset tomorrow night. The storm could strengthen to G2 levels by midnight and continue through the rest of the night. Keep in mind that the storm’s intensity will fluctuate, so the auroras may appear dim at times.

On Saturday night, we could experience G3 geomagnetic storm conditions between 11 PM and 2 AM, with G2 storm conditions continuing throughout the night.

As for the weather, Friday night’s forecast calls for some scattered clouds, particularly in Eastern Ontario and around Lake Ontario, but it should gradually clear in other parts of Southern Ontario. Most of Northern Ontario is expected to have clear skies.

Saturday night is looking clearer across Southern and Northeastern Ontario, although clouds moving in from the west could interfere with viewing in Northwestern Ontario.
