We know that students feed off the energy of their teachers. And to a large extent, the teachers feed off the energy of their principal. So schools need principals who are excited about what they’re doing.
We all give off vibes… and these vibes impact those around us. It is inescapable. Sometimes our influence is intentional, and sometimes it is accidental. But be assured… we are always making an impact.
Holding students accountable and demonstrating compassion are not incompatible notions. You can always extend grace while you provide discipline. You can always respect their dignity while you administer consequences.
Sometimes, when I am talking to a student in my office who has been “getting into it” with another student, I’ll ask them: “Are you being part of the solution or part of the problem?”
As adults in the school, that’s also a good question to ask ourselves.
“Being a teacher means being an active learner about the students’ lives. Sometimes being an active learner of students’ lives means stepping outside of the classroom & into their students’ community.” @chrisemdin will be speaking at #NCTE18 on Saturday! https://t.co/w0Pm8TETSX
"Trauma stems from not having any control of your situation. ... Banding together, being a place where students feel safe and they know they have a voice to be heard, will go a long way towards helping them" https://t.co/XK1PMs9Kye @anya1anya#edchat#traumainformed#cpchat
The Danger of Teacher Nostalgia https://t.co/BCyxNJzWk7 via @cultofpedagogy “Nostalgia for the past is toxic when it makes us feel contempt for the present.”
Kids make poor choices (just like adults).
Keep in mind though, it’s the conversations we have with them and not just the consequences that make these poor choices learning opportunities.
Some of your students are in the middle of custody disputes. That’s not something you can fix... but an awareness of the stress students are dealing with can put things in perspective. #Patience#Compassion#Empathy
