Classic Albion, the triumphs and the calamities.

The spectacular ways we’ve found to make life difficult for ourselves.

Jeff Astle's winner at Wembley. Cyrille, Laurie, Brendon. The Great Escape. Promotion at Oldham. Going 3–0 up and drawing 3-3.

Classic Albion. 💙🤍

The Hawthorns from the Smethwick End in the 1960s.

I saw my first game from the old Halfords Corner (top left). Everyone would make a racket by stamping their feet on the old wooden floor when we had a corner.

@nigelpeter01 I’m too young to remember Lovatt, but my dad remembers him as a great player. Just a shame they both weren’t around now, they’d be multi-millionaires.

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

Derek James Statham.

Possibly the best thing to come out of Wolverhampton.

#wba

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

@DavBarry155 He’s Cannock surely?

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

@nigelpeter01 Exactly that.

It took a local newspaper petition to get Bryan Robson in the England squad. That sums up Greenwood.

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

@JohnBlewitt2 Totally agree.

Greenwood’s selection policy ended at the M25.

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

Albion 5 Coventry 2 from November 1984, one big old boys reunion.

Cyrille’s swift return, Terry Gibson and Jimmy Nicholl admiring each other perms a little too much and none of that modern “not celebrating against your former club” nonsense. #WBA

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

@Baggeridgebaggy Which is a shame considering where we were at the time. Also recall him saying he wanted to be nearer to his family, but would’ve thought there would be higher ranking teams than Bolton after him.

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

Len Cantello.

One of those players who perhaps never recieved the recognition he deserved, but we missed him after he left for Bolton.

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

That red card at Pride Park looking even more costly now.

Sad news, get well soon. #wba

An update on the fitness of Nolan Galves. 🤕

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Nolan! 🫶

No idea how the Manchester City case will play out, what I do know is that in all those games during their "creative accountancy" period, we never even got close to them.

Jerome Thomas hit a post when we drew 0-0. That was it.

Wins at Anfield, OT etc, but zero v City. #wba

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

@HJMKent Thanks Howard. I wasn’t around at that time, but his name isn’t one I recall from scanning Tony Matthews’ books as a kid.

And well done reaching that figure 👏🏼

Some old landmarks in the picture during Albion 2 Spurs 4, 1962.

Any background on our number 9 Keith Smith gratefully received. He’s one that’s gone under my radar.

19 years ago today, Albion strolled to a win against QPR in the late September sunshine. Some familiar faces held their own mini Goal of the Season contest.

Has there been a better finisher at The Hawthorns than Kevin Phillips? #wba

Good move for the kid, no doubt that young players develop more when playing regular first team football out on loan.

[West Bromwich Albion @WBA]

Carter Pinnington has joined @SolihullMoors on a three-month loan deal. 🤝

Best of luck, Carter! 💪

@iknkrewll9988 Yes, that’s right. The old Woodman scoreboard and that corner stayed much the same until demolition in 1994.

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

@sjpatel212 And their goal was a joke IIRC.

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

Never seen this one before, what a picture #wba

@baggiebloke Thanks Jon. Thought it looked like him, wasn't sure.

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

Got to admit I am struggling with some of these. I can see Ronnie Allen, but is that Don Howe or Ray Barlow behind him? #wba

West Bromwich Albion training led by Derek Kevan

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

@baggiebloke Yep. If only we had known how badly things were going to go.

[Classic Albion @ClassicAlbion]

Horrible team selection, horrible performance, horrible goal.

A truly horrible day, on and off the pitch.
