I had a very difficult relationship with my parents and was genuinely afraid of them. There was abuse involved, and failure did not feel safe to admit. But I also don’t want to use that as an excuse. I was avoidant. I could be lazy.

They sheltered me my whole life, I didn’t know if it was out of fear that they’d lose me, or that was just how they showed affection. When I was younger, they’d walk me to and from school until I was a senior in high school. It was embarrassing, but I didn’t really care much.
