KZN health probes death of intern doctor allegedly forced to work while ill

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has initiated an independent investigation into the death of 25-year-old medical intern Dr Alulutho Mazwi, who collapsed and died while on duty at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Umlazi on Monday, May 12.

Dr Mazwi, who had been diagnosed with diabetes over a year ago, had reportedly informed his line manager that he was unwell but was allegedly instructed to report for duty regardless. A message he sent read, “Good morning Doc. I am not feeling well today. Apologies for the inconvenience caused to the team,” to which his supervisor allegedly replied, “I expect you to be on duty.”

Dr Mazwi's family revealed that his health had deteriorated in the days leading up to his death. His uncle, Vhuani Mazwi, stated that despite his condition, Dr Mazwi felt compelled to return to work due to alleged threats that he would have to repeat his rotation if he did not. He was reportedly scheduled for hospital admission on the day he passed away but chose to work instead.
