NEW RESEARCH: Electrification of industrial processes can deliver significant energy efficiency gains.
This excellent new policy brief demonstrates this using Germany as a case study. The policy brief also provides a useful analysis of technical applications, barriers to uptake and policy solutions.
The graphic in this post shows the savings potential for selected applications in TWh (bars) and the efficiency gains specific technologies can deliver (blue dots represent applications listed earlier in the policy brief in Figure 4).

How do we trigger a fundamental change in steel, cement, & chemical production to net-zero that initially raises their cost, but drives global market share uptake while reducing costs to parity? A 🧵from 2 new reports, from @ColumbiaUEnergy & https://t.co/KzLIE2jf7p

Great day @CMUenergy week, so fun to hear from you @CostaSamaras about the amazing impact BIL/IRA is having and will have. Though not sure how you come back from all those billions and not turn into Lucille Bluth…
@gnievchenko Thanks! A non-intuitive downside of off-the-shelf is you're buying from someone else's shelf. What's your POV on the likelihood that the electrolyzer industry coalesces on standards in order to boost their buying power for this kind of "mass-customization", "type 2" savings?
@gnievchenko This is one of those signposts that might make people think H2 is forever the fuel of the future, especially if BOP is raising the cost floor with very little ability to get cheaper. What's the case that H2Council 2027 doesn't say "$2/kg H2 in 2043"? Ramboll paper?
@curious_founder Particularly surprised (perhaps naively) by the lack of savings as the system size scales. Is every line item in the cost stack linear?
@JesseJenkins Have heard high CAC is plaguing HPWHs as well. Any idea what the rest of the world is doing to lower that? Assume it’s not a technology solution. Governmental education campaigns?
Meet the Five Superheroes of the Transition. 👋
In his latest piece, @MLiebreich presents the bull case for the net-zero transition and breaks down the 5 megatrends that will help us get there. https://t.co/ToR1zJSK2W
@bataille_chris Good complimentary pub out today from ACEEE calling out the need for flexibility to address (3). Of course comes with additional cost and operational complexity… https://t.co/pvpaP8JBiT
1/We @fervoenergy are excited to announce our new geothermal drilling results. We have achieved a 70% YoY reduction in drilling times, dramatically outpacing predictions, and are poised to unleash a new wave of geothermal decades ahead of schedule. THREAD. https://t.co/UJc0oojzou
To decarbonize homes, we need to install millions of heat pumps.
In 2023, heat pumps outsold gas furnaces for the second year in a row.
I spent the last month trying to understand why. Here's what I learned: https://t.co/EPgD8d5Lzt

“I am eager to help @CarnegieMellon and the Scott Institute play a lead role in creating the net-zero energy systems of the future.” Costa Samaras said of his return to CMU as the director of @CMUenergy Read here ⬇️ https://t.co/h3ZMG1dtmW
Lucky to get to show that @magratheametals made more light metal in 1 day yesterday than we made in all days ever before yesterday (this blob wasn't even half of it). Scale-up is so fun! There was 0 direct CO2 emission in the process. Zero! 0️⃣

A thing we do a lot at the @ImpulseLabs_ office is ... cook steak.
But we can do it, thanks to our temperature sensors, in a totally novel way: via exact temperature reverse-sear.
~131F / 55C for ~1 hour (and 2 flips), then a quick sear.
No water bath, no plastic, 1 take.
