#BREAKING: After over 1000 days in prison, Guatemalan journalist Jose Rubén Zamora was finally released following sustained pressure from international press freedom organizations, including reporting by our TrialWatch team.
Despite Zamora's release, his journey to freedom is still ongoing and we continue to stand with him, and those fighting to expose corruption in Guatemala.
We honored Jose Rubén Zamora recently at The Albies in October, shining a light on his unjust detention. Learn more about his inspiring story and his lifelong pursuit of justice in this short film featured at the event.
#Guatemala: CPJ welcomes the release of journalist #JoseRubénZamora, an important step toward justice. @MPGuatemala must end the use of criminal law to silence the press. The State must guarantee freedom of the press and ensure that journalists can work safely and without fear of retaliation. c. @OJGuatemala
#Philippines: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has nominated imprisoned journalist Frenchie Mae Cumpio for the 2026 Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, in recognition of her outstanding courage, commitment to journalism, and defense of press freedom in the face of adversity.
“Frenchie Mae Cumpio is a beacon of journalism in a country long saddled with abysmal conditions for the press. Awarding her with the 2026 UNESCO/Cano Prize would be a clarion call for the Philippines and other countries to cease the rampant criminalization and undue imprisonment of journalists,” said CPJ Chief Global Affairs Officer Gypsy Guillén Kaiser @GypsyStrategy.
Press freedom groups @RSF_inter and Free Press Unlimited are also nominating Cumpio for this year’s prize.

#NEW: One year ago this week, Georgian authorities arrested veteran journalist Mzia Amaglobeli. In our latest Fairness Report, #TrialWatch and @CovingtonLLP found she’s faced fair trial violations at every stage of the proceedings.
Georgia is making an example of Amaglobeli to intimidate other critical voices. As the country’s authoritarian shift deepens, share the report to demand authorities #FreeMzia.

Together, CFJ and @UniofOxford's @BlavatnikSchool are building AI legal assistants that will:
🗣️ Connect women and girls to lawyers in their own language
📋 Guide victims of violence through complex protection order processes
⚖️ Link detained journalists to pro bono aid quickly
In Malawi, where 1 in 3 women experience violence, fewer than 800 lawyers serve 22 million people. But what if AI could change that?

“Inequality is the enemy of hope, and hope is the oxygen of democracy.”
@DarrenWalker transformed philanthropy by challenging the systems that create inequality. His leadership at the @FordFoundation proves that lasting change requires confronting uncomfortable truths about power and privilege. At this year's #TheAlbies, we honored his unwavering commitment to justice.

“My visit to the Philippines gives me hope. Young people have shown they are unafraid to denounce what is wrong.” —Amal Clooney
For years, CFJ co-founder Amal Clooney has stood with @mariaressa in her fight against unjust prosecution. In a recent visit to Manila for @rapplerdotcom’s #SocialGoodSummit 2025, she showed why it’s critical to stand up for brave reporters like Maria.

At a keynote session moderated by Nobel laureate @mariaressa at @ahrctweets’s Rule of Law Forum last month, CFJ co-founder Amal Clooney announced that the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice is joining forces with the Center to advance justice for women and journalists in the Philippines.

Digital safety = gender equality. And economic security. Legal information. Access to courts. Safe housing. Freedom from child marriage. The right to be believed.
When violence takes new forms, our work must too.
Until every woman can live free from violence, in every space she occupies, in every form it takes.

🇹🇭 Dr Chutima Sidasathian, an award-winning Thai investigative journalist, has spent years exposing corruption. She has faced relentless legal harassment, incl. 5 criminal defamation cases. One case remains, despite lacking merit, while she undergoes cancer treatment abroad.
For survivors of gender-based violence, the fight for justice doesn't stop after #16Days.
This is why we partner with organizations like @FLAGambia, who meet survivors where they are—every day. This year alone, they've supported survivors in at least 28 sexual and gender-based violence cases—providing legal aid, pursuing justice, and defending the laws that protect women and girls.
Real change takes more than a campaign. It takes all of us, 365 days a year.
