Honored to receive the @SPJdetroit Sojourner Truth Award for racial justice reporting last night (and @MichiganPress's Wade McCree Award for the Advancement of Justice last month). For years it felt as if I was screaming into the void about Detroit cops plucking young Black guys off the street for nonviolent offenses and shooting them as they ran away -- yes, even when they had guns. Grateful to see there are like-minded people in this profession who agree that's a problem. Sadly, it's a tough space to have impact, and carrying a gun -- even for your own protection in a high-crime city -- can still be a death sentence, but at least the issue is now on policymakers' radar.

Thank you to my editor @cmacfreep for believing in this work and seeing it through; thank you to my other editor, @DetroitReporter, for suggesting I widen the scope of my look into police shootings when I first came to him with the idea just two months after starting at @freep; and thank you to @FundFIJ for covering the thousands of dollars in FOIA costs to obtain the records this reporting was built on.
