Attention NYC educators! @BioBus is running a New York City Virus Hunters teacher PDs for grades 8-12 educators the week of August 18 and 25. It's free, and lunch will be provided!✨More info and direct registration link https://t.co/ag71XV0leW
Get in loser, we're going bird counting. 🐦
When you're not a regular science agency, you're a cool science agency, you celebrate #MeanGirlsDay. And what better way to celebrate than to learn about birds.
Disclaimer: we don't think gulls are mean, it's just a great pun!
Antimicrobial resistance is a global crisis, and Christine Marizzi’s New York City Biome Map is a powerful reminder of our shared duty to combat this silent pandemic.
Check out the amazing work from the NYC Virus Hunters (@CMarizzi and @florian_krammer) published in the Journal of Virology. https://t.co/gYMkemZtII

Hi all - I've a couple positions open for lab management and research! Please pass on to creative and enthusiastic folks who might be interested. And repost if you don't mind.
Ability to learn/adapt more important than specific skills!
Thanks so much.

Collaborating with the community to prepare for pandemics is incredibly effective in fostering understanding and building trust in public health and scientific research @CMarizzi

Good to see this one in print. Multiple HPAI H5N1 genotypes detected in four different avian species in New York City highlighting risk of zoonotic infections extends into urban centres.

Not very surprising, as H5N1 is everywhere in birds & birds can fly.
But response depends on finding them, which depends on looking. This great new piece from Randy Albrecht, @florian_krammer, @CMarizzi et al shows that community scientists can help look.

Hi Friends,
I'm excited to announce that I set up a crowdfunding campaign for my sugar selection system for antibiotic-free cloning! Finally formalizing this project; it's been a dream for too long now. Every penny counts; please RT!

Our New York City Virus Hunters tested a lot of milk from supermarkets in NYC for H5N1. No trace of genome or antibodies to the virus. With @Babagannoosh and @CMarizzi
1. Did you hear that scientists found dairy cows infected with HPAI H5N1 (Bird Flu), and have even found non-infectious fragments of viral RNA in store-bought milk? The New York City Virus Hunters from BioBus have been hard at work checking the milk on shelves in NYC.
Remember that a disproportionate number of persons at risk for getting #H5N1 from animal exposure are farmers and migrant workers - they may be reluctant to seek care for various reasons.
Important to engage with these communities to understand barriers to care.
Bird flu has been found in a tiny percentage of New York City birds: "several geese, a peregrine falcon, a red-tailed hawk and a chicken .... So far, only two humans have been infected with H5N1, or bird flu, in the United States since 2022."

Great feature of our work in New York City with @BioBus@wildbirdfund@CMarizzi and @Babagannoosh. And very helpful information for the community.
