Inspired by today’s HUSD Alumni gathering and grateful for the opportunity afterward to reconnect with my brother and friend, Dean Dr. Kenyatta R. Gilbert, along with the outstanding team from Howard University’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations.
Even though Dr. Joshlyn Thomas was talking crazy about my NY Knicks. 🏀💙🧡

Symbolizing hip-hop’s maturation into leadership, legends and curators of the culture are no longer just spitting bars or creating rugged beats detailing the complexity of their struggles in the inner city.
Hip hop’s legends are now emerging transformationally in strategic spaces; speaking truth to power in spheres and academic disciplines including:
* economics
* mathematics
* spirituality
* engineering
* cinema
* politics
* faith and culture

Minister Lauryn, we are all so incredibly proud of your latest accomplishment as a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary. You embody the very best of what faithful leadership, scholarly excellence, and servant ministry can look like for those who desire to fulfill God’s intended purpose for their lives.
As you begin this new chapter as Princeton Seminary’s Assistant Director of Recruitment, may God use your prophetic voice, vision, and pastoral witness to open doors for countless future seminarians, just as God has faithfully opened doors for you.
Finally, may the prayers of your ancestors continue to guide your steps, strengthen your resolve, and illuminate your path. Your future is bright, your calling is clear, and as you heard from the many who testified at your graduation party today, your impact in the kingdom has only just begun.
So very proud of you! 🙏🏾✨👏🏾🤙🏾

🎤📚 Looking forward to joining scholars, educators, artists, and cultural leaders at this year’s Hip Hop Ed Conference 2026, June 5–6, 2026, at Teachers College, Columbia University.
I’ll be presenting a paper that explores Nas’ comprehensive investment and business model, reimagined hip hop pedagogies for public education, and emerging entrepreneurial pathways currently being cultivated within hip hop culture.
Hip hop continues to shape how we think about education, innovation, community development, and economic empowerment. I’m excited to contribute to a dialogue that bridges scholarship, culture, and practice.

I am saddened to hear of the recent passing of Clarence B. Jones, Esq. An extraordinary man who possessed many gifts, Dr. Jones served as the strategic advisor, legal counsel, and speech writer of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Among his incalculable contributions to the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Jones drafted a portion of Dr. King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech; and smuggled the sections of Dr. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” personally.
A renaissance man ahead of his time, Dr. Jones also provided legal counsel to notable record executives in the hip hop recording industry.
Meeting Dr. Jones for the very first time on Martha’s Vineyard during the summer of 2023 was like meeting a wise and gentle grandfather.
I will never forget the many stories he shared.
In deed, one the last of the lions from a pivotal moment in American history. 🕊️
