Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Digital Economy, in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), hosted a high‑level forum on Monday (15) under the theme “Collaborating for a Secure Digital Future: Virtual Assets,” bringing together policymakers, regulators, and industry experts to strengthen the country’s regulatory approach to virtual assets. Presided over by Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne, the session featured insights on domestic market realities of P2P channels and offshore trading, global precedents from hubs like Singapore and Hong Kong, and essential compliance measures such as KYC, AML, and blockchain traceability.

Sri Lanka takes its first real step toward crypto rules

Sri Lanka is done ignoring crypto. The country's SEC (@SEC_SriLanka) and Digital Economy Ministry brought regulators, policymakers and industry together this week to map out a virtual asset framework, for a market that's run entirely outside the formal system until now.

The model they're studying: Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Malaysia. The focus: KYC, anti-money-laundering, and investor protection.

Most local crypto activity runs through P2P and offshore platforms today. The regulators want it onshore.
