Pat McAfee says his dad refused to pay $1500 for the camp so he gambled a borrowed $100 into a bigger scholarship and the NFL
“It was going to end up costing 1,500 bucks. My dad, a truck driver, went into working in a warehouse. Mom’s a secretary. Like 1,500 bucks in a four-day period is not a feasible thing. Dad, I think, told me to actually go f*ck myself…”
There was a big game happening in the basement of an Italian restaurant in the town that we grew up in. Bigger blinds, bigger antes, bigger pots. But I got a hundred bucks from one of my friends that has money.”
“I went in there and I turned it into 1,400 bucks. I left at like 3:30, 4 a.m. And I met my dad when he was waking up, and he was like, ‘Where the f*ck have you been?’ And I gave him the money. Went down to the camp. Ended up winning the camp. Got a scholarship to West Virginia the next morning.”
“If that doesn’t happen, do I go to West Virginia? Do I end up in the NFL? Probably not.”

Dawn Staley says after talent, the next thing she evaluates in a recruit is how they treat their parents
“Obviously the magnetic thing is the talent, right? And then the next prerequisite is your relationship with your parents. It’s got to be respectful. When I was 20 years younger, I would probably take on any talent. Bring it. I got stamina for you for days.”
“But throughout my years of coaching, I found out that I spend a whole lot more time on those type of players than the ones that were doing the right thing. And that’s really unfair.”
“It’s like parenting. My mother spent a whole lot of time with the boys in the family because they were boys and they just did things. Less time with us doesn’t mean she loved us any less.”
“But I just try to balance that out with surrounding this program with great people because the talent’s there, the coaching’s there, the fan base is here. The only thing our players really have to do is go to class and buy in on the basketball court.”

The 2027 Hall of Fame class is going to expose a broken system.
There are CLEAR Hall of Famers in this class. Yet they’ll still have to wait while people politic, debate, and move the goalposts… That’s Bull crap!
Greatness shouldn’t need a campaign. Don’t make another Roger Craig wait decades to get the flowers he earned.
Please fix the process.
