Accountability matters

Tom Izzo shares a powerful lesson on accountability and the kid's toy he's used for 20 years to teach it.

"I have a thing in my office in my staff room. I had my wife 20 years ago buy about 6 of those Barbie and Ken mirrors - you know, the little mirrors."

Here's how he uses them:
"Whenever we have a problem here - somebody screws up, something happens in class, we lose a game and we're going around my staff room asking, 'Well, whose fault is it?'..."

"The first thing I do is get those 6 mirrors out."

"I say, 'Look in the mirror. Look in the mirror and decide - did I do something wrong to start with?'"

"Now, I hate to admit it, but that happens."
That's self-accountability.

Before you point fingers, you have to look in the mirror.

Before you blame others, ask yourself what you could have done differently.

The best teams don't look for excuses - they look inward first.

Accountability starts with you. Always.

This is just one of the many reasons why I chose to volunteer as a coach for my Alma Mater, CBA. President Keough displaying the quintessence of leadership in a well thought out message. At the center of this, it’s not about what coaches and AD’s think is fair. It’s about what facing adversity does for student athletes. Did the 1980 Olympic Men Hockey team refuse to play the Soviet Union team loaded with professionals, no. They worked harder and gave us all the Miracle. NCAA Cinderella stories happen each year. Boston College Hail Mary. Indiana’s climb to win the NCAA football. And so on. All stories of overcoming obstacles and perceived imbalances. All changed lives. It’s why we love sports. It’s the lessons we learn and now teach that we value so much. No matter your personal beliefs on the discussion. What’s right isn’t changing the circumstance to make it easier. Easy teaches a bad lesson. Working harder is the lesson we strive for.

1. First few years we faced a lot of adversity. We got back to culture, team building, strength training, and hard work. It’s a testament to what this game is all about. If you stick to it, the record always follows.
2. When you refuse to compete, you concede defeat. I don’t know how you can lead young men and teach them about adversity of life when you choose to not compete. We accept the challenge of playing a tougher schedule across NY and out of state.
3. CBA strides for greatness in all things. Blue Ribbon recognized education. And now we can play a tougher football schedule that will lead for better development and opportunities for our young men. I am enthusiastically excited for our these athletes to get even more access to broader collegiate opportunities bc of the better competition they will face. This is at a time where access to college is at a premium.
