A trap Michigan finds itself is that it is addicted to Rhino on passing plays because of the double teams it affords in pass pro. Problem is when in Rhino they only have 2-3 route runners and the QB has nowhere to throw the ball. And when not in Rhino the OL is overwhelmed in pass pro and the QB gets rushed or hit. Its a deadly trap.
The worst call in history just got worse. How did Beck and the Offensive coaches not pick this up? The goal-line play was NEVER going to work.
4th and Inches... the Left DE is spying Bryce the entire play. The DE literally reaches out and touches Bryce at the end of play.
2min later on the same drive.
3rd and Goal and the DE is spying Carr all day and blows up the play.
@kingsctkids@MichiganNation2 Exactly... it was a team first mentality, checking of egos, and a business mentality that resulted in a national championship.

@BriceMarich Harbaugh installed system whereby game plans and play calling wasn't focused on one individual. It brought variety and unpredictability in the play calling and I would argue a system that allowed more internal criticism, growth and adaptability.
This whole series of plays gets even worse as I was told that Indiana showed this look against Ohio State with the DE staying home and spying the QB.
Let's give Beck the benefit of the doubt and maybe he didn't notice the DE spy on the 4th and Inches, but he also had to know Indiana has also seen Michigan run the naked boot on the goal-line as Michigan already ran this with Bryce. How Beck thought he was being sneaky is beyond me.
I've run the option and this is more like Power Read / Inverted Vee concept built off jet sweep action vs standard zone read. The mesh came really early. The Left Guard would have blown up Carr if he had kept the ball. Indiana is really disciplined and has awesome gap control. They basically had both options covered.
@KicknitWTheGrid I also learned that Indiana showed this same look with the DE spying the QB during the Ohio State game. So Beck had to have seen this when scouting.
I have to believe that Beck has other offensive spotters/coaches helping during games. If not that would be insane. When I was a high school OC and calling plays the other coaches were almost constantly feeding me information about the defensive formations, personnel, down/distance, who was open on a play, blocking success, etc... the OC can't focus on everything. It's impossible.
Personally I need to go back and look at more of Beck's (Utah and UNM) film to see how defenses tried to stop him. I get the feeling they were not loading the box on a consistent basis with 8-9 players as defense not having to worry about the passing game. The problem for BEck is Western Michigan showed other teams what could be done with 8-9 in the box and consistent blitzing without being afraid of passing game. And Beck has just never adjusted by adding a quick passing game, TE delays, screens, and enough play action to slow down the defenses.
@CFBChuckk Just WOW... Beck could be the most stubborn coach who doesn't seem to be able to look beyond his own scheme or game plan and adjust either in real-time during games or at the macro level.
Yup... I was only a high school offensive coordinator and head coach and I saw the spy on Bryce. I was screaming at the TV on the goal-line 2min later because nobody was there to block the DE. A play action naked boot that defenses had already seen Michigan run earlier in the year. On the goal-line. Insanity.
What is crazy is that Jim Harbaugh won the National Championship and beat Ohio State without spending that type of money, but deployed a model to develop a bunch of 3-4 Star players, but primarily 3 Stars.
What I don't get right now is why are some teams not going with the proven model employed by Harbaugh to win a National Championship?
And before I let you answer I know what people will say. Players want to get paid. Even 3 Star players get paid, but I do believe there is room to pay 3 and maybe 4 Star players. Keep them at your school with enough money and because you found players who want to dedicate themselves to the team and winning.
Bring in a group of talented players who fit into the model you design. And in the case of Jim Harbaugh a bunch of TEAM FIRST hard working players dedicated to one another, the business of football, the goal of getting better and winning.
Which is these happened on this play per the NCAA?
Unnecessary contact: Hitting the passer long after the ball has left their hand.
Head or Neck Contact: Forcible contact directed to the head or neck area, including helmet-to-helmet hits or using the forearm/shoulder to the head.
Low hits: When a passer is in a passing posture with one or both feet on the ground, an unabated rusher cannot forcibly hit them at or below the knee area, nor can they initiate a roll or lunge into the legs.
Driving to the ground: Punishing or driving the passer violently into the ground after the pass is thrown.
Targeting: Any illegal targeting actions against a defenseless passer
The pocket had already collapsed... why Beck has Tommy doing 5 and 7 step drop backs is more the question as these were not working and quick timing patterns would have been more effective against an insanely good defense who is notorious for putting pressure on the QB. Just ask Julian Sayin who is now warming the bench in a sling.
It gets worse... on 4th and Inches 2min earlier on the same drive the Indiana DE spied Bryce all the way. Didn't go anywhere near the RB on a key 4th Down play. In fact at the end of the play the DE reached out to touch Bryce.
And on goal-line Indiana did exactly the same thing... the DE spied Tommy and blew-up the play along with Tommy.
The Michigan coaches should have seen this coming, but they wanted to run the naked boot, a play defenses had already seen Bryce run on the goal-line.
