When you're in the lab, working on your "bag" this offseason, remember...
- 50% of your shots come with no dribble (catch and shoot)
- 20% of your shots come with 1 or 2 dribbles.
And don't forget, the more dribbles you take, the lower your shooting percentage gets.
No Dribbles - 1.19 Points Per Shot
1 Dribble - 1.07 Points Per Shot
2 Dribbles - 0.99 Points Per Shot
3+ Dribbles - 0.98 Points Per Shot
With a side note, lay ups are by far the most efficient shots in basketball, so use that dribble to get to the rim if you need to!
This data was taken from an 24-25 NBA season. It barely changes season to season.
I understand extending full court to use up time with 5 seconds or less, but with 9 seconds? It's not worth the risk of giving an immediate advantage to the offense. Also, why is the defender fighting over the top of that initial screen? Go under and meet him on the other side.
Horrendous decision by FL coach. Up 1 w/ 9 sec just keep the ball in front of you and make them beat good defensive over the top. Instead this moron gonna press full court and Iowa immediately creates a 2 on 1 on the strong side for a rhythm 3. Sometimes this shit hard to believe
Have you noticed this SUPER IMPORTANT trend in the NCAA tournament?
Half of your shots come off the catch!
And according to analytics (HS to NBA and WNBA), they're the highest Points Per Shot or EFG%.
Each additional dribble you take after the catch, your shooting percentage goes down.
Make sure your offseason workouts are aligned with this!
Offseason workouts should contain these elements after a game-like cut:
- Shots off the catch
- Shots off 1 dribble > finishing move
- shots off 1 dribble > pull up jumper
- Shots off dribble move > finishing move
- Shots off dribble move > pull up jumper
- 1v1 and 2v2 games
The 1v1 and 2v2 games replicate the action you're trying to practice. That way, they get used to shooting and make decisions against live defenders.

My daughter played 2 mins vs USC…
She ran at 6am that morning
She shot over 500 3’s the day before
She did PT after and ice bathed
After the game, she got in the sauna and ran 2 miles to offset lack of game run.
Staying ready is a mindset.
It’s not for the weak minded.
It’s for the dedicated who see a bigger future ahead and the few that believe they can do the job when called upon.
This girl will see the fruits of her labor! No doubt!

This is my annual plea for the NCAA to adopt 4 quarters for men's basketball with the free throws resetting after each quarter. No one wants to watch a free throw competition every game.
Troy Athens 2026 F Lewis Payne spoke with The D Zone about their nice win tonight.
