2nd time in school history. Loved watching this team move in silence all year. 8-4 regular season, kept coming to work and pounding pavement everyday. Incredible staff and group of student-athletes.
Excited to finally announce Coach Goras as our next Womens track coach. Coach Goras was a 2014 NCHSAA state champion winner in the Hurdles and 4x4 relay. Coach Goras went on to run at the Division 1 level for Western Carolina University. Welcome Coach Goras to the Bulldog Family!
The benefits of high school sports:
1. Sports teams create a front porch and brand for the school.
2. Athletics serve as the largest and most successful at-risk school program. Playing sports provides purpose, discipline, motivation and structure for those who may not get it at home.
3. The local community connects with the school district through sports. Athletes are discussed and celebrated in the area newspaper, on the radio, and on the news. Games provide entertainment and something to do for everyone from children to those who are retired.
4. Booster clubs raise money providing everything from meals and uniforms to facility enhancements and travel expenses. This enhances parent engagement within the school district and teaches students about being generous and committed to their local community.
5. The student experience for non-athletes is enhanced because of sports. The student body comes together to cheer their team which creates school unity. The band, cheerleaders, dance team, choir, and others have increased opportunities to showcase their talents on game days.
6. Sports create tradition and enhance school culture. Alumni come back for homecoming games and more to support and feel connected with their past. This valuable engagement enhances school support and creates fundraising opportunities for the school district and community.
7. Sports hold athletes accountable for academic success through eligibility requirements. Being a member of an athletic team provides a safety net for student-athletes who are monitored and held to high academic standards to help ensure academic performance. This enhances the classroom for everyone and lifts the school GPA and test scores.
8. Sports build excitement. They are the reason for a school mascot, school song, and pep rallies. Our youth need something to do, something to look forward to, something that teaches life-long lessons.. Athletics provide all of the above while building teamwork and enthusiasm while encouraging a pathway for lifelong physical fitness.
9. Top high school athletes earn scholarship opportunities. Those who come up short of an athletic scholarship still have created a pathway to go to college as a result of being a student-athlete.
Nick Saban said, “You have to show that you care for other people and you have to be willing to serve other people. I always ask people to ask themselves, Do you pray to be blessed or do you pray to be a blessing?”
Great leaders believe they serve the team.
They know that servant leadership is about adding value to others.
• It means supporting others.
• It means empowering others.
• It means making everyone else better.
Servant leaders accept the responsibility that leadership means doing more.
How to Master Servant Leadership:
1. Let go and Empower Others - This is the art of letting go as a leader. You have to have faith and trust in your team. Empower them, love them, and care for them. You have to be smart, tough, and use good judgment. It should be easy to serve them and want to see them at their best.
2. Believe in People and Their Potential - See the best in others and believe in them. When you believe in people, you build their confidence, motivate, and inspire. Have faith in their capabilities and their potential. When you recognize that each individual has unique strengths and talents, you create an environment where their skills can be developed and utilized.
3. Connect and View Other People's Perspectives - Ask people for their opinions and feedback. Be empathetic and actively listen to their point of view. This approach builds deeper connections and helps in addressing their needs effectively. This is important because it allows you to connect and build relationships with people. When you walk in their shoes, you show that you care.
4. Add Value to Others - It’s easy to just sit back and wait around, but you need to take action. Add value and serve people means taking action. You need to help people get to where they need to be. Focus on what you can do for your team rather than what they can do for you. Your greatest achievement is helping others succeed.
5. Measure Success by the Team's Success, Not Your Own - It isn't about what you can accomplish, but asking what can we accomplish together. Ask yourself what can we build together that is special and can last? The goal should be to make it bigger than just the bottom line, whether that is winning games or making money. Your collective success is the true reflection of effective leadership.
6. Earn Respect Through Your Actions - It shouldn't just be about yourself, but it should be about the team. Demonstrate your commitment through your actions. You should have a great attitude, be collaborative, and work together. If you can help each other accomplish what you need then you have a chance to be great.
"If you want to be successful on the highest level, be willing to serve on the lowest." - John Maxwell
