Is anyone else concerned with the lack of structure in school leader PD/PLC's? Students want great teachers, shouldn't teachers expect great leaders? #EDLR5402
This week’s #EDLR5402 work on equity really brings home the need for school leaders to be visible and present. Constantly hiding behind closed doors, “justified” by an endless to-do list, seriously damages their vision of what their school needs.
“The only thing I can do is listen; the only thing past that is learn.” @asabaiii That’s a shared concern with addressing equity. As you finished with, I too few my “toolbox is rather empty.” We all grow, though, and there’s plenty of room in our toolboxes to fill. #EDLR5402
Meg Riordan exposes the research behind professional learning is largely quantitative, with data pointing to standardized tests. There is so much more to education than numbers. Leaders need to turn up the volume on the qualitative “data” of our communities. #EDLR5402
“At this critical juncture in our global society … too many underserved students struggle in classrooms that reinforce low-expectations and inequity.” (Riordan) From the top down, expectations need to be appropriately amplified to better serve our students. #EDLR5402
“Of all the judgements we pass in life, none is as important as the one we pass on ourselves.” - Nathaniel Branden. This is just as important today with all the issues our students face in and out of school. Every kid, every day. #EDLR5402
“Monitor your language and manage the follow-through.” @FredEnde speaks the importance of being clear in your beliefs and message to drive your vision. People have a hard time following leaders through fog. #EDLR5402
“If everyone agrees… you might have a problem” @BernsteinCT reinforces the idea to build trust within the organization and to rely on the people close to you to speak up when others won’t!! #EDLR5402
Big takeaway from #EDLR5402 tonight is the need of resilience and patience to overcome the vicious Forming/Storming loop. I see this on the field with new techniques stalling athlete performance-gaining opportunities and see the connection to some of my colleagues mentality.
@jrain51 your quote of “Connection over Content” is officially stuck in my head. It’s also one of my concerns coming from an elective class background and feeling inept in leading academic teachers. #EDLR5402
Being a self-identified doom-and-gloom’r at our school’s PD, I appreciate @thelearningloop books approach to giving teacher agency in our own growth. As our school exits accreditation sessions and re-enters PDL I’ll be using her suggestions to improve my mentality. #EDLR5402
Kyle Mayer hit the nail perfectly with this one… “Resect, empathy, and engagement are essential to the hard work of sustaining lasting change in schools.” They form the bonds needed to support the load. #EDLR5402
On every team, there is a core group that sets the tone for everyone else.
If the tone is positive, you have half the battle won. 🏆
If it is negative, you are beaten before you ever walk on the field. 🏟️

Morning thought…. If the average turnover rate for principals is only 3-4 years, how can they build the culture required to successfully roll out CPD? Furthermore, what percentage of principals stick around long enough to see meaningful results? #EDLR5402
