Success on the pitch and survival do not always go hand in hand.
Despite producing one of the most memorable seasons in its history, significant changes have been made for Plymouth Argyle Women, potentially ending a story that seemed destined for further glory.
Argyle have just made history this past season with record attendances, making the FAWNL Cup Final for the very first time and narrowly missed out on promotion to the WSL2 through the play offs, finishing just 1 point behind the league champions, Watford. This marked a complete turnaround from a relegation battle in the previous season. And whilst this would be a thriving opportunity to turn success into a bright future, the club made a decision that reflects the polar opposite.
Argyle decided to cut budgets by 60%, whilst also releasing almost every player who played a part in this historic season through email. No room for discussion, no in person conversations, just a cold and impersonal group email. Whilst these individuals gave everything for the badge, Argyle gave them just a short email.
The club claimed they were ambitious and committed to creating a fully professional womenโs team, meaning not only is this outcome damaging to players but there is also concern about the message this sends out to fans and young girls in the region but also the wider football community despite previously having received accolades for their commitment to progress within womenโs football.
Despite growing crowds and increased attention, womenโs football continues to face challenges that menโs clubs encounter to a much lower degree, underlining how far the sport still has to go in its pursuit of genuine sustainability. Until clubs are given the support and stability needed to build on their achievements, stories like this may continue to be told.
For now, the clubโs past season stands as both a celebration of what was achieved and a warning of how much work remains to be done.

Every time I log in here, there is another womens team being shafted by either people who don't get it, don't care or worse do get it and got greedy. The womens game is being broken by the people who claim to support it.
