I'm sure the students I've had over the last few years who had a parent die would be a lot happier if certain students and staff would have stayed home when they are sick. When we remove so many of the aspects of being a child from education, we leave students frustrated, anxious, and discouraged. Then we wonder why there's misbehavior, off task behavior, and disengagement.

Building relationships doesn't just help with behavior in the classroom, but students also work harder for teachers they care for them and respect them. Relationships before rigor.

Possibly the biggest mistake we make in education is focusing on weaknesses instead of strengths and talents. Every child has strengths and talents to be great.

Homework does little to improve achievement and can actually have negative effects, especially at elementary level. Recess however has many positive effects such as improved self regulation of emotions, improved interpersonal skills and focus! And should never be taken away.

I heard a radio personality talking about teachers the other day. She saidits ok for students to go to teachers for extra help during the teachers lunch hour and after-school. I was thinking you have no idea about teaching. Lunch hour? And teachers need down time!

We spend 50% more hours in school than Finland. They get 15 mins of recess every hour. They have NO standardized tests except for PISA in HS and they outperform us every time. When we can’t give students more recess, physical activity & Arts then we don’t understand education.

Our students need more recess, unstructured play, Physical Education, all the Arts, and extracurricular activities! That's how we make their social/emotional health a priority.
