The ultimate recognition for the man who gave his heart & soul to the program. 🐅

I signed to UCLA my junior year of high school and was told I was going to start Day 1.
Opening Day at UCLA?
I was sitting the bench. 😭
I had 2 choices:
1. Complain, pout, and blame the coaches
OR
2. Find the holes on the team and become valuable.
So for 3 weeks, I sat the bench.
I showed up early.
Stayed late.
Cheered for my teammates.
Dragged the field every 3rd inning.
Meanwhile, I studied the team.
The middle infielders were doing well.
Third base wasn’t.
So I told the coaches:
“I can play third.”
Then I noticed something else:
Offensively, we were either hitting home runs or getting out.
I saw the gap.
If I could become a tough out, get on base, and bring energy to the team…
I could create value.
Then we played Miami.
The starting third baseman was hitting .115.
They gave me a shot.
I went 2 for 3 with a walk.
Played solid defense.
Brought energy.
I never sat the bench again.
Eventually, I became team captain…
and we were ranked #1 in the country.
One thing baseball taught me:
Opportunities don’t always go to the most talented player.
Sometimes they go to the player who becomes the most valuable.
I asked Dan Hurley the same question I asked Tom Izzo: why does the media have a problem with coaches coaching players hard?
Hurley: "Society has gotten soft in a lot of ways... The real world is tough and cruel... I'm preparing my players for life."
My Highschool baseball coach begged us to watch 20-30 minutes of college/professional baseball a night. I never understood it.
Reflecting on it now, I am deeply grateful I did as he asked. It helped me think the game & develop baseball IQ ahead of my age.
As I help coaching Highschool baseball now : The baseball IQ is seemingly getting worse for high schoolers as time goes on & the world becomes exceedingly more short form & instant gratification centric.
If you’re a parent and/or young baseball player I hope you understand how much understanding the intricacies of the game will play in your favor over the long haul.
Following River Bluff’s 4–0 win in the nightcap, Ashley Powell & Andrew Rye join the postgame to discuss the five scoreless innings thrown by Powell plus Rye’s key 2-run triple to put it away:

2026 IF Chase Pollock fires this back into CF for a knock.
Generates strength from the ground-up with explosive hands in-zone and present feel for the barrel.
Positional versatility across the infield as well.

Thanks @diamondprospect for having me at the palmetto games! I had a great time competing with some of the best players in SC and won the golden arm award!
1 inning 3 batters 3ks
Ashley Powell (‘26, SC) lines this to the RC gap & hustles around for a 2B. Athletic look & frame, moves pretty well on the base paths. #WWBA@PG_Coastal@PG_Uncommitted
Blake Davis (‘26, SC)- Primary RHP getting it done with the stick here, dropping this into the OF grass & advancing runners into scoring position. 6’5/202 frame. #WWBA@PG_Coastal@PG_Uncommitted
Myles Mayers (‘26, SC) shoots this the other way thru the hole to scratch across another run. Spread base & heel lift trigger keeps things simple to contact, does a job here well. #WWBA@PG_Coastal@PG_Uncommitted
Nico Knight (‘26, SC) fights this off the other way for an RBI single. Loads into HBE slot, knob led path to contact with some strength in the hands. #WWBA@PG_Coastal@PG_Uncommitted
Cash Unruh (‘26, GA) lines this over the 6-hole for a knock. Compact stroke, works the hands in nicely with extension out front. #WWBA@PG_Georgia@PG_Uncommitted
Great win for the team on day 2 of wwba! Played againt a good rough riders team ranked #32 nationally. Produced a lot of weak contact and had a great defece behind me to back me up.
