In 1876, Charles Sumner Harrison became the first black graduate of @MariettaCollege.

Harrison went on to become a physician in Washington, D.C. and worked for the Medical Department of the U.S. Pension Bureau.

In 2019, the Charles Sumner Harrison Scholarship was established, providing full tuition to top-performing freshmen who have impacted or promoted social justice and inclusion in their community.
