For coaches our real job is development, not just wins.
Those goals often come at odds with each other, and many times, parents make it worse. They conflate winning with quality which then pressures coaches to chase the scoreboard instead of growth.
A few areas where I think this tension shows up most:
1) Playing hero ball
2) Handling ball pressure at younger ages
3) Over-relying on athleticism
4) Position-specializing too early
5) Rewarding outcomes over decisions

If the Spurs had Wemby they probably would’ve won this game but losing him hurts a lot because they like to go 4 big Guards between (Fox, Castle, Harper, Vassle, Champagnie, Johnson). Wemby provides their shot blocking and presence inside.

Dawn Staley nailed it.🔥
You can’t shelter your child from every hard moment and then expect them to handle adversity when it counts.
Hard is the lesson.
