🛢️🇸🇦 A Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), laden with more than 2 million barrels of Saudi crude, is currently bypassing the Red Sea and Bab el Mandeb choke point by taking the long route around the Cape of Good Hope on its way to South Korea. This alternative passage nearly doubles the nautical distance relative to the standard Suez Canal transit and adds approximately 30 days of steaming time.

Significantly, the vessel did not take on its full cargo at the Saudi load ports. It initially received a partial lift via a ship to ship transfer off Saudi Arabia's western terminals. That reduced draft enabled the ship to navigate north and clear the Suez Canal, which cannot accommodate a fully laden VLCC due to draft restrictions. The tanker then completed its remaining load at the Sidi Kerir anchorage on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, as indicated by the red arrow. From that point, it set a southeast course for the Korean Peninsula.

A VLCC carrying more than 2 million barrels of Saudi crude is heading to South Korea the long way — around Africa.

That voyage is roughly twice as far as the usual Red Sea/Bab Al Mandab route, adding about 30 days.

The tanker was only partly loaded, apparently by ship-to-ship transfer off Saudi Arabia’s western ports. It then sailed north and transited the Suez Canal. A fully loaded VLCC cannot cross Suez. It finished loading Saudi crude at Sidi Kerir (Egypt, see red arrow) then set course for South Korea.
