The multiplayer version of The Last of Us was about 80% complete at the time of its cancellation in late 2023.

The game’s director, Vinit Agarwal, revealed that he had worked on the project for around seven years and only learned about its cancellation one day before the official announcement.

The main reason for the cancellation was a strategic decision by Sony.

The company had to choose: either Naughty Dog would release and support a live-service multiplayer game for years, or focus on developing a new major story-driven AAA title.
