An address cannot tell you it is wrong.

Everything else in a transfer is verified: signature, nonce, balance, contract state. The destination is not. Any twenty bytes is a valid address, and EIP-55, the one check that exists, is carried in the case of the letters and disappears the moment the address is written in lowercase.

One wrong character resolves to another valid address out of 16^40, held by no one. The transaction confirms, nothing reverts, and nothing can be returned.

Codetag addresses a transfer to an "@ handle". A handle that does not exist fails before anything moves.
