Valve actually uses that 30% and reinvests it back into the platform and to create new products. They ask that in order to sell on steam you must make the price of the game the same anywhere else. They are the only company I've ever felt protected by as a consumer and anyone who complains about them is just jealous of their success because they have to cater to shareholders which keeps them from ever being successful.
