The Russian Foreign Ministry has co-opted First Lady of the United States Melania Trump's efforts to advocate for the return of deported Ukrainian children. The Kremlin is now rhetorically attacking the United States and undermining efforts to repatriate tens of thousands of abducted children.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova is claiming that recent bipartisan legislation aimed at supporting efforts to track and repatriate Ukrainian children is "anti-Russian" and undermining US-Russia political rapprochement.

Zakharova also highlighted the fact that international mediation efforts have returned 122 children to-date, using the 122 figure to downplay the scale of Russia's deportations of Ukrainian children and claim that Russia is willingly returning the "few" children that somehow found themselves in Russian borders. It's worth reiterating that Ukrainian authorities have VERIFIED the identities of 19,546 deported children to date, and @HRL_YaleSPH is credibly tracking the whereabouts of 35,000 deported kids. The true number is likely to be much higher.

Zakharova’s remarks represent a new Russian informational effort to use the deported Ukrainian children as a bargaining chip in negotiations between the US and Russia. Russia will attempt to use this new informational line to relieve pressure on the Kremlin in future negotiations to end the war and further complicate efforts to secure the return of the deported Ukrainian children.
