What does it mean to have only 5-minute phone calls a week to speak to your friends and family? In this video, we bring you Umar Khalid’s first-person account, as narrated to his friends and family and published first on The Quint, of what these five-minute phone calls mean to him inside Tihar Jail.
Khalid says that he is “allowed to make three 5 minute phone calls in a week” – and that prison has taught him that “every second is precious”.
“After lunch, I make notes for my next phone call,” he says.
“How long is five minutes!” he asks, before describing what the lack of time to speak to friends and family does to a person: “The sheer lack of time to speak to your friends, something that is out of your hands, pushes you into isolation.”
“The privilege to take time to ease out the knots of a difficult conversation with a loved one is simply something that is not afforded to me in prison.”
Umar Khalid has remained in custody for six years while legal proceedings continue. His supporters have described his incarceration as an example of the challenges faced by dissenters and political prisoners in India, while authorities have maintained their allegations against him.

I took an @Uber_India XL cab from Gurgaon to Delhi today. The driver was on the phone throughout speaking to his partner, and took a wrong route. When pointed out, he asked me to “chup chap baitho” and spoke very rudely further. I felt unsafe but found no panic button.
🚨 BREAKING:
The International Court of Justice declared the "State of Israel" illegitimate and ordered its withdrawal from the land and territory of Palestine..
🔴Husam Abu Safia is one of 95 doctors sentenced to death by Israel.
His only “crime” was treating and caring for the wounded people of Gaza—people Israel wants dead.
If you don’t want to watch him face execution, share this.
Beautifully depicted. Kudos @TheQuint for showing us what journalism is and should be.
“How is it that I have spent most of my thirties in captivity? I wonder if this continuing injustice makes a difference to anyone? Does it move even a feather in our hallowed chambers of justice?”

“NAZA”, a documentary about Israel’s AI-powered mass killing in Gaza, received a 25-minute ovation at the Venice Film Festival.
It features Israeli intelligence personnel and whistleblowers discussing how Palestinians were targeted.
Al Jazeera’s Dmitry Medvedenko reports.
Why is it that the attack on these two journalists has not led to sustained protests like those we saw in other cases? Is it not simply because these two women are Muslim journalists?

We're publishing our most detailed threat intelligence report to date.
It covers how people tried to misuse Claude—for cyberattacks, influence operations, surveillance, biology, and building weapons—and how we found and stopped them.
We disrupted every operation in the report, and used the lessons from them to strengthen our safeguards. Where appropriate, we also shared what we found with authorities and other AI companies.
These cases are not typical: we’re highlighting some of the most sophisticated misuse we’ve seen. But they’re especially important to discuss, because they show us where AI misuse is headed, where our safeguards work, and where they need to improve.
We’re publishing this report so others can spot the same activity on their own platforms, and so we can give the public a clearer view of how emerging threats develop.

NDTV was literally the last bastion holding off Modi’s charge towards destroying democracy in India.
Sreenivasan Jain explains, to Mehdi Hasan, the reason why he left NDTV once Adani had taken over.

Thrilled that @thewire_in and I made the front page of Spain's respected El Mundo, and truly honoured to win the newspaper's Freedom of the Press Award.
Independent media is under attack in India, the US, and elsewhere too, and it is by collective defence, mutual solidarity and the raising of our voices that all those who care deeply about press freedom and democracy can make a difference no matter which part of the world they are in.

District authorities in Assam flattened the homes of 73 Muslim families across five villages on September 7, over allegations that agricultural land was used for residential purposes without official conversion. Evicted residents say they were given only one day’s notice before bulldozers arrived, leaving them unable to salvage their personal belongings. The eviction action followed complaints from a local group accusing migrants from other districts of illegally acquiring land in the area. The Gauhati High Court has flagged the eviction drive as illegal, noting that proper administrative procedures and fair hearings were denied before the homes were destroyed
