“In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce,” Leo wrote. “There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.”

The incredibly well-articulated, profound, and timelessly wise sentiment went over like a lead baloon with right-wingers because they deeply resent the idea that there is inherent value in human beings. They see us all as nothing more than economic units that they can either sell something to or extract value from.

They want to replace artists with plagiarism machines that pump out endless AI slop because it’s good for their corporate profits. Without a trace of irony, they’ve begun referring to Leo’s post as “popeslop.”

These people are deeply, deeply antihuman. They despise Leo because he dares to proclaim that humans cannot and should not be replaced by mindless machines for the benefit of a few incredibly wealthy oligarchs. We cannot allow them to win.
