Russian Firms Use Crypto to Dodge Sanctions

Two major Russian companies are using $USDT and other cryptocurrencies to conduct cross-border transactions with China to bypass UK and US sanctions, according to Bloomberg. Executives from two top Russian metal trading firms said they use USDT for transactions with Chinese clients and suppliers.

Sanctions following the Ukraine war have made payments difficult for Russian commodities firms. In April 2024, the London Metal Exchange and Chicago Mercantile Exchange banned Russian metal exports due to sanctions.

Ivan Kozlov, CEO of Reslov Labs, said countries facing dollar shortages and capital controls commonly use cryptocurrencies and stablecoins for cross-border settlements.

Venezuela’s state oil company also plans to increase its use of crypto due to new US sanctions. Previously, it had slowly adopted USDT for oil sales, but sanctions have accelerated this transition.

The sanctioned crypto exchange Garantex is under investigation by the UK and US for allegedly using $20 billion in USDT to evade sanctions. A smuggler reportedly used Garantex to buy weapons for the Russian military. Garantex is also linked to a convicted gang member, a violent debt collection agency, and a state-backed Russian oil company.

🚨 Japanese Exchange DMM Bitcoin Hacked for $305M

DMM Bitcoin, a Japanese crypto exchange, lost $305 million (48 billion yen) in a hack. The hacker stole 4,502.9 $BTC, splitting it into 10 wallets with 500 BTC each.

DMM Bitcoin assured users they will cover the loss with help from group companies. The exchange has restricted spot buys and warned that yen withdrawals may be delayed.

Before this, over $473 million had been lost to crypto hacks in 2024. This is Japan's second-largest crypto theft after Coincheck's 58 billion yen hack in 2018.
