@MhehedZherting@latimeralder For now. And for many years to come, to meet Marginal Demand.
But it's not the Future, though, is it?
At one time, there was a purely Environmental Argument for phasing out Gas.
Right now, Economic & Supply Security ones also exist for using less of it.
You see that, surely?
@AndyNTyne@latimeralder Alder is deliberately misrepresenting Decarbonisation of Electricity.
He knows full well that the Conservative's 2035 Target includes the continued use of Gas with CCUS or Offsetting.
I've told him.
So will Stamer's Plan.
Alder is just spouting his usual Half-Truths and Lies.
@NatalieCarmody@latimeralder It's closer to 13%, but the fact that they burn a ton of hard coal and lignite additionally means they are subject to Carbon Taxes.
Shutting down all the Nukes was a stupid mistake, so I wouldn't hold Germany up as an example of anything.
@Iansn57@latimeralder And that fixed Strike Price used to be higher than Gas, but is now significantly lower.
See either of these two things.
https://t.co/EDxoe6j4Z0
@latimeralder How's the Price of Gas Generation going?
ยฃ6,000/MWh for Rye House CCGT last December.
ยฃ1,950/MWh for Coryton CCGT in March.
Is that Cheap, is it?
Even the new Nuclear CfDs are only ยฃ90/MWh, and they looked a Rip-Off at the time.
Bet they're kicking themselves now.
@bjames280961@latimeralder BIg fan of Nuclear.
A Rolls Royce SMR will be able to Power a decent-sized City.
General Fusion hope to have a Demonstrator Plant up by the middle of this decade.
Alder is remarkably quiet on these technologies.
And every Mt of CO2 we emit before they arrive is problematic.
@MhehedZherting@latimeralder The Maximum Strike Prices for CfDs are going up for three reasons.
1) General Inflation
2) There is a bottleneck in the actual Infrastructure Supply right now
3) They know they can demand it because Gas Generation is hugely expensive.
So Gas is still not our Saviour.
@latimeralder 15 Minute Cities are about Convenience, not Restrictions, and you know it.
If you want to drive Thames Valley to Manchester for a Pint of Milk, or to go to a Library, you go right head.
@MhehedZherting@RobinShipston@latimeralder I've never said we don't need Gas as a baseload provider. For now, anyway.
I've said reducing our reliance on it is a good thing.
You're pretending I'm making an argument I'm not.
Straw Man nonsense.
@MhehedZherting@latimeralder But here's a whole Tweet to you in August explaining the 2025 thing and the 4th Allocation Round, etc., etc.
Can't you just admit Gas isn't Cheap like it used to be?
Hell, I thought the new Nuclear Strike Prices were extortionate, now they look cheap.
https://t.co/q9Y8sndheD
@MhehedZherting@latimeralder Here's a whole bunch of them from the 4th Allocation Round that will come onstream around 2025.
The ones coming online now from the 3rd Allocation Round are more expensive, but even ยฃ70-odd or more per MWh is way, way, cheaper than Gas Fired Generation right now.
@periodicaudio@latimeralder@rationalist44 The Power is only paid for when it's delivered, so that first point is nonsense. 0 MWh, ยฃ0.
Secondly, Nobody is Mandated to but Power from anyone, but the "last MWh" sets the Wholesale Price, currently driven by Gas.
CfDs were a "subsidy" when Gas was Cheap.
Not anymore.
@MR_Doodles54@latimeralder Nope, that's when you fire up the Gas Generation.
Which you don't, unless you have to.
And it's only going one way right now. Gas Generation is about 1/3 of the total, and it's only going to get smaller.
I'm particularly keen on the RR SMR, which could power an entire city.
@FollowTheScien4@latimeralder Of course it's not a sensible option to provide baseload, but there's no sense in not using when it's available.
Besides, Alder omits all the other options, like Solar, Biomass, Nuclear, Geothermal & Tidal.
Alder just advocates Fossil Fuels.
Which are a 1/3 and getting smaller.
@NatalieCarmody@latimeralder When have I ever said we rely 100% on intermittent Generation? Never.
What I have said is the Renewables are currently more Economical & Environmentally better than Gas Generation, so it doesn't matter if one variety is fickle, we use whatever we can, when we can.
Including Gas
@bjames280961@latimeralder And the Government has repeatedly stated we will have an Energy Mix to alleviate these issues.
Alder just picks one technology at one moment in time to advocate binning all Renewables in favour of Fossil Fuels.
Which everyone knows are Finite; he's yet to explain what's next.
@Iansn57@latimeralder No argument there.
But that doesn't mean we bin everything that isn't Gas Generation, which currently accounts for only about a third of our Electricity Generation Annually.
What's having to buy all that extra Gas going to cost?
When there's a Wind Farm, right there, already?
@NatalieCarmody@latimeralder Do you use Economy 7 Electricity when it's available? Or do you just want to pay full-whack all the time?
Do you insist at Happy Hour in the Pub to pay Full Price because it's not Happy Hour 24/7?
What's wrong with using the Resources that are cheapest at any given moment?
@DSloan80512@latimeralder We pay for some Reserve Capacity, yes.
Did I ever say we should do away with Gas entirely? No.
Not in my lifetime anyway, but it will happen.
Should we develop CCUS for Gas Generation, yes.
The CO2 we emit now will impact us for Generations.
And by the way....
