People do not just stop reading. They get their attention slowly pickpocketed. One notification at 09:13. One “short summary” video. One more day where their brain only touches words that fit on a screen you can scroll with your thumb. Whole lives go by without anyone sitting alone with a paragraph that does not care if they are bored. Reading is not about books as furniture. It is the only cheap way to borrow someone else’s interior for three hundred pages and see how they argue with themselves. If you never watch a mind take the long way around a thought, of course romance feels corny and propaganda feels sharp. Tweets are sugar. Books are teeth.

What you are really saying is “people have lost stamina for depth.” Poetry hurts because it notices too much. Novels are suspicious of easy answers. Essays make you hold two ideas in the same hand until one stops shaking. That is where romance and resistance both come from. A person who reads knows how to stay with discomfort long enough to name it instead of forwarding it as a conspiracy thread. You want better lovers and less gullible citizens. Hand them stories that demand patience and do not light up their brain every three seconds.

I was recently taking a train from Chicago to Spokane. A woman was talking very loudly over the phone to her husband and said “no, Bob, you aren’t listening”. A man on the train spoke up and said “maybe Bob isn’t listening but I sure am”. I said me too and about 20 other ppl said, “yeah, me too”. The woman said “sorry, Bob, but I have to hand up”. We all said “good night Bob”. The woman got the point.
