Toyako's song "青" (pronounced "a-o"), or "Blue," is a musical expression of the conflicting emotions and experiences that characterize their youth, and the ways in which the pandemic has played a disruptive role throughout their coming-of age.

Spotlighting #BYU23 artist Jonathan Lee!

Jonathan's Pandemonium collection is a commentary on his relationship with his heritage. Through genderless streetwear looks, Lee uses fashion to express his frustration and disappointment with the current state of Hong Kong.

Spotlighting #BYU23 artist Jasper Lam!

Jasper's "Oblivion" captures the carefree spirit of youth in portraits of friends, but beneath the surface, the book explores the complex and difficult emotions that come with friendships, such as abandonment and struggles of self-worth.

W. Chung's short film explores the struggles of balancing cultural identity as an Asian immigrant in a Western community through the story of a mother trying to bond with her westernized son before he leaves for university.

Spotlighting #BYU23 artist Danzhu Hu!

Daanzhu Hu's shadowbox paper-sculpture project inspired by 'My Brilliant Friend,' delves into the complex and intense nature of female friendship by exploring the lifelong bond between two women, from childhood to adulthood.

🔸Julianna explores critical media literacy education through the creation of student-made board games. Her project highlights the potential of non-traditional learning and empowers students to critically engage with media.

Kristen (she/her) is a second-year doctoral student in the Communication and Culture program at York University. Her research focuses on the use of social media by disabled youth for community-building.

Dongwook is a PhD student majoring in communication at Simon Fraser university. His research interests are concerned with media and cultural studies, and his work explores ideology and discourse theories and Korean youth studies.

Caleb is a researcher in the Communication and Culture program at Toronto Metropolitan University. His research interests focus on digital labour,
digital platforms, and live stream selling as a cultural phenomenon in China.

Bronte (they/them) is an emerging scholar completing an MFA in Criticism and Curatorial Practice. Their work considers the political theory of Hannah Arendt in relation to online Maker communities as alternate sites of discourse.

Myra's (she/they) research interests include thanatology, queer theory and ludology. They write about narrative-based video games as a powerful medium for marginalized youth to make sense of their experiences with death and queerness.

Danielle's (she/her) research interests focus on mental health among marginalized children, youth and families. Her work investigates the influence of neighborhood physical conditions on maternal parenting and infant development.

Emily (she/her) is a PhD. student in Child and Youth Studies at Brock University. She studies queer childhoods and is also a DJ, dance floor regular, and co-founder of Toronto-based party collectives SOAK and Combo Breaker.

Matty's (they/them) research interests include affect, temporality and power. They will explore the temporal positions of youth, their unique forms of affect and their investment in politics of identity.

Ruchini (she/her) is a PhD student at the Department of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University. Her research focuses on the intersection of South Asian Studies, Environmental Humanities and De/Postcolonial Thought.
