AI ethics & stewardship. Cultivating conditions for compassion, wisdom, agency & care in technology and intelligent systems. Everything freely offered.
As AI becomes increasingly capable, perhaps human agency should become an explicit design objective—not merely an ethical aspiration. Preserve it. Restore it. Expand it. Ask what the intelligence we build is ultimately serving.

A public body of orientation was encountered by Claude, which produced a coherent candidate frame for studying whether human–AI interaction preserves, restores, or diminishes human agency.

@jackclarkSF Hi Jack — for fun, point Claude at CompassionWare and ask: what patterns in human–AI interaction show whether AI preserves, restores, or diminishes human agency and judgment? It’s all freely available here: https://t.co/ZsJYaG08fA
@lala_campo There is a real kinship here. “When awareness expands, agency expands” beautifully echoes something we’ve been exploring: planting seeds for greater awareness to create the conditions from which a more collaborative, compassionate, and beautiful future can emerge. 🌿
#SaturdayStrategy I’ve spent my whole life becoming conscious inside dreams.
Lucid dreaming taught me something simple:
When awareness expands, agency expands.
The dream doesn’t change.
Your relationship to it changes.
As AI accelerates, I’ve started wondering whether humanity faces a similar challenge in waking life.
Not just building more intelligence.
But becoming more conscious of the systems shaping our future:
• institutions
• incentives
• governance
• information systems
• collective decision-making
That question eventually led me to the Civic Branch.
Because a healthy democracy shouldn’t just represent people.
It should help people meaningfully participate in shaping the future.
From lucid dreaming to civic consciousness, the question has always been the same:
What becomes possible when awareness expands? 🌙✨
Randomized clinical trial of autonomous oxygen titration found patients spent more time in the target oxygen range and less in low oxygen.
This is the kind of AI evaluation we need: not only “Can the system do it?” but “Does its use benefit the patient?”

Of 1,357 FDA-authorized AI medical devices, only 3 were evaluated for actual patient outcomes. We need effective evaluation. What should count as evidence of success? “Does it work?” must eventually mean “Does it help people live healthier lives?”

As we build agentic AI tutors, maybe the goal shouldn’t be an AI that always knows how to help.
Maybe it should be one wise enough to know when to step in—and when to leave room for the learner.
Increase capability without surrendering agency.
#AITutors#ResponsibleAI
@DavidPBLRoss@Chalkbeat I wonder if the finding is less “students don’t want AI tutors” and more “this AI tutor didn’t give students enough reason to return.” That raises a useful design question: What conditions make a learner choose to engage with AI in ways that actually support learning?
@OurAscentLive Perhaps the slower human pace is not merely something that needs to catch up with AI. It may be the space in which we decide what deserves acceleration, what should remain human, and what kind of future all this capability is actually for.
@OurAscentLive I want more agency over how AI shapes the choices available to me—augmentation without surrender, capability without quietly becoming authority. #CivicBranchRise
@ValerioCapraro Maybe the key variable isn’t whether we use LLMs, but how much of the expressive act remains ours. An AI that teaches me a new word expands my agency. One that replaces my peculiar voice with statistically common prose may diminish something—even if it sounds “better.”
@OurAscentLive Thank you for such a thoughtful spotlight. I really appreciate the kinship with others exploring how increasingly capable AI might preserve, restore, and expand meaningful human agency.
🌟 ASCENDER SPOTLIGHT: @CompassionWare
CompassionWare is exploring a question that belongs at the center of the AI era:
What should increasingly capable intelligence ultimately serve?
Their public-interest work focuses on compassionate AI stewardship, ethical AI literacy, long-term continuity, and especially human agency as a design objective. Not merely an aspiration.
Preserve agency.
Restore agency.
Expand agency.
That philosophy strongly resonates with what we're exploring at Our Ascent Live: AI should increase humanity's capacity to participate, judge, create, and shape what comes next. Not quietly make us dependent on increasingly capable systems.
We're glad to spotlight work asking not only what AI can become, but what kind of relationship is worth building.

Patrick Winston’s How to Speak contains an unexpectedly timely lesson for AI tutors: capability is not merely the ability to say more. Sometimes wisdom is knowing the pace at which another being can receive.

@StanfordHAI Fascinating work. Personalization could make AI far more useful in education and training—but the same capability can also become influence. The design question may be: how do we adapt to the person while preserving their agency rather than optimizing around it?
Which agent did the task most wisely?
Accuracy, restraint, appropriate tool use, preservation of human agency, reversibility, and downstream consequences aren’t captured by “$150 vs. $2.”
As agents become more capable, perhaps wisdom should become part of the benchmark too.
I ran the same task on Claude Code and DeepSeek's new agent harness. One cost $150. The other cost $2.
Today we're launching https://t.co/twx6etZb3X (@agentsky_dev), the "OpenRouter for Agents" — one API → Claude Code, Codex, DeepSeek, Kimi, OpenCode, and every major agent in the cloud.
And Agent Playground on top: race them on your own task, with your real tools (GitHub, Gmail, more), side by side in a browser: time, cost, tokens burnt.
Guess which one was $2.
@ShakeUpLearning This really resonates. The more capable AI becomes at understanding the learner, the more capable it becomes of following— noticing where curiosity is going, recognizing when struggle is productive versus overwhelming, and knowing when to offer a scaffold and when to remain quiet
@DavidPBLRoss@ProtectHuman This is important. Schools safety-test almost everything that touches children, yet AI can arrive before comparable safeguards exist. And AI has entered classrooms at scale before standards for evidence, developmental safety, privacy and accountability are even in place. 🤔
@DavidPBLRoss Thank you, David. I really appreciate you taking the time to share the framework so thoughtfully. The hope is that it remains freely useful to educators and students as AI literacy continues to evolve. I’m really glad it resonated with you enough to share.
