‘My only “offence” is practising journalism’

Mr Raja, who is now a freelance journalist, told The Telegraph: “I strongly reject the Pakistani government’s politically motivated attempt to seek my extradition.

“This is not a criminal matter — it is a clear case of transnational repression aimed at silencing a journalist who has reported on human-rights abuses and corruption inside Pakistan’s military establishment.

“For years I have faced systematic retaliation: my passport and ID were cancelled, my assets were seized, I was court-martialled in absentia without due process, and my mother was abducted and prevented from leaving Pakistan.

“In the UK I have faced a counter-terrorism investigation that resulted in no further action, and an aggressive SLAPP lawsuit [strategic lawsuit against public participation] designed to financially destroy me.

“The latest development — Pakistan reportedly offering to repatriate convicted grooming-gang offenders in exchange for my extradition — is unprecedented and deeply disturbing. It shows the extent to which an authoritarian regime is willing to go to suppress dissent.

“I have broken no UK law. My only ‘offence’ is practising journalism and exercising free expression. I trust that the UK, a country committed to the rule of law and press freedom, will not allow political critics to be traded away under pressure from a foreign government.

گلگت بلتستان کے نام نہاد الیکشن میں پیپلزپارٹی کو سیلیکٹڈ کی گالی ملی اور نواز شریف کو تشریف پر دوبارہ لات۔ اب بے شک دونوں آرام سے بیٹھ کر فوجی بوٹ چمکاتے رہیں، اصل مسائل خود فوج کے اپنے لیے پیدا ہوگئے ہیں۔ جس طرح سابقہ فاٹا کے ڈسٹرکٹس اور بلوچستان میں نہ فوجی آزاد نقل و حرکت کرنے کے قابل ہیں اور نہ ہی ان پر مقامی آبادیوں کو کوئی بھروسہ باقی ہے، اسی طرح اب شمالی علاقوں میں بھی یہ روڈ بلاک کر کے اپنی آمد و رفت کر سکیں گے۔ گویا اپنے ہی ملک میں ایسٹ انڈیا کمپنی کی فوج کی طرح گزر بسر ہو گی۔ عزت کی ویسے بھی منیرے مستری کی فوج میں کوئی خاص ضرورت نہیں بچی۔
پاکستانی عوام کی بڑھتی نفرت اس ادارے اور اس کے اندر بیٹھے جرنیلوں کو جلا کر رکھ دے گی۔ ظلم نے مٹنا ہی ہوتا ہے۔ کشمیر میں جو غیر انسانی سلوک کیا جارہا ہے اس کے اثرات بھی بہت جلد شمالی علاقوں تک محسوس ہوں گے۔ شتر مرغ کی طرح طوفان کو دیکھ کر سر ریت کے اندر چھپا لینے سے آفت کبھی ٹل نہیں جاتی۔
آنے والے اگلے 2 ہفتوں کے اندر پاکستان میں مزید خوفناک آئینی اور انتظامی تبدیلیاں ملک کو مزید تباہی کے راستے پر دھکیل دیں گی۔ عاصم خنزیر اور اس کے حواریوں کا کھیل اپنے اختتام کو پہنچنے کے اب مزید قریب آگیا ہے۔ ان میں سے کسی کو بھی معاف نہیں کیا جائے گا۔

راولاکوٹ کی سائے دار وادیوں میں، جہاں پہاڑ ایک زمانے میں مقبوضہ کشمیر کی آزادی کی دعاؤں کو سرگوشیاں کرتے تھے، اب ایک گہرا زخم اس نام نہاد “آزاد” کشمیر پر خون بہا رہا ہے۔ میں اب بھی راولاکوٹ سے گزرنے کی ان یادوں کو دل میں سنبھالے ہوئے ہوں جب میں @soldierspeaks کے ساتھ حجیرہ جا رہی تھی۔ ان وادیوں میں زندگی کی دھڑکن اور خاموش امید محسوس ہوتی تھی۔ آج راولاکوٹ خون بہا رہا ہے۔ آج ہوا میں صرف صنوبر اور مٹی کی خوشبو نہیں، بلکہ وقت سے پہلے چلی گئی روحوں کی بھاری خاموشی بھی ہے۔ کشمیری بھائی بہن گرے ہیں، نہ کہ کسی دور کے دشمن کے ہاتھوں، بلکہ انہی قوتوں کے نیچے جو ان کے محافظ بننے کا دعویٰ کرتی تھیں۔

یہ کوئی عام سیاسی جھگڑا نہیں۔ یہ ایک گہری روحانی خیانت ہے۔

آزاد کشمیر کے لوگ احتجاج کے لیے اٹھے، ان کے دل امن سے بھرے تھے۔ وہ روٹی، بجلی، عزت اور ان حقوق کا مطالبہ کر رہے تھے جو ان کی ندیوں اور مستقبل سے چھین لیے گئے ہیں۔ وہ اپنے ہی ڈیموں سے نکلنے والے بھاری بجلی بلز کے خلاف، دور دراز کی جیبوں میں غائب ہونے والی سبسڈیز کے خلاف، اور ایک ایسے نظام کے خلاف مارچ کر رہے تھے جو انہیں اپنی آبائی زمین پر صرف کرایہ دار سمجھتا ہے۔ جواب آیا لائیو فائر اور آنسو گیس کے بادلوں کی صورت میں جو گلیوں کو گھونٹ رہے تھے۔ جنازے مزید تشدد کے منظر بن گئے، رپورٹس میں بزرگ، خواتین اور نوجوان شہید بتائے جا رہے ہیں جو اپنے مردوں کو دفناتے ہوئے گرائے گئے۔ جنرل عاصم منیر کے زیرِ کمان پاکستان آرمی پر الزام ہے کہ اس نے غم کو قتلِ عام میں تبدیل کر دیا۔

کتنا آسان ہے کہ آزاد کشمیر کے کشمیری، گلگت بلتستان کے ان کے بھائی بہن، اب پاکستان کے غداروں کی تازہ ترین فہرست میں شامل ہو گئے ہیں۔ ایک ایسی قوم میں جہاں صرف ایک ہی سچا وفادار ادارہ ہے، پاکستان آرمی، اور اس کا اعلیٰ ترین، ناقابلِ خطا لیڈر جنرل عاصم منیر، ہر دوسری آواز ناگزیر طور پر بے وفائی کا ثبوت بن جاتی ہے۔

پنجاب کے کسان جن کے کھیت نظرانداز کی وجہ سے سوکھ گئے ہیں اور جن کی آوازیں جاگیردارانہ طاقت اور فوجی حکمرانی کے بوجھ تلے دب گئی ہیں، سندھ کے ماہی گیر جن کے جال خالی لوٹتے ہیں جبکہ ان کے پانی زہر آلود ہو چکے ہیں اور روزگار چھین لیے گئے ہیں، بلوچستان اور خیبر پختونخوا کے وہ طویل عرصے سے برداشت کرنے والے اور بے رحمی سے دبائے گئے لوگ جن کی سرزمینوں پر ہمیشہ استحصال کی لوہے کی مٹھی اور خوف کا سایہ رہا ہے، کراچی کے مہاجر جو اپنے گھروں سے بے گھر کر دیے گئے، اپنے ہی شہر میں حاشیے پر دھکیل دیے گئے اور اس شہر میں اجنبی قرار دیے گئے جسے ان کے آباؤ اجداد نے آباد کیا تھا، اور اب وہ پہاڑی لوگ جو اپنے گھروں میں روشنی اور گلیوں میں انصاف مانگنے کی جرأت کرتے ہیں، سبھی بے نقاب ہو کر اندرونی دشمن قرار پا چکے ہیں۔

کتنا آسان ہو گا ایک ایسے ملک پر حکومت کرنا جہاں وطن پرستی صرف خاکی وردی اور راولپنڈی کی حکمت سے ہی نکلتی ہے، جبکہ باقی آبادی کو گولی اور لاٹھی سے مسلسل اصلاح کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔

اس ادارے کی روح کہاں ہے؟ وہ آرمی جو کشمیر کو پاکستان کی شہ رگ قرار دے کر دنیا کو خطاب کرتی ہے مگر خود کشمیریوں کی رگوں میں خون آلود کر رہی ہے۔ وہ لائن آف کنٹرول کے پار "جائز جدوجہد" کے لیکچر دیتے ہیں مگر ان لوگوں پر جان لیوا طاقت استعمال کرتے ہیں جو اپنی اندرونی زنجیروں سے نجات چاہتے ہیں۔ جنرل عاصم منیر کی قیادت اس منافقت کی علامت بن چکی ہے: ایک جنرل جو خود کو عقیدے اور مظلوموں کا محافظ بنا کر پیش کرتا ہے، جبکہ اس کے فوجی انہی مظلوموں کا خون بہا رہے ہیں جن کا وہ دعویٰ دار ہے۔ احتجاج کرنے والے اب اس کے نام کے خلاف نعرے لگا رہے ہیں، وردی کو ڈھال نہیں بلکہ ظلم کا آلہ سمجھ رہے ہیں۔

تجزیاتی طور پر یہ ایک ناگزیر دراڑ ہے۔ دہائیوں کی مرکزی لوٹ مار، قومی مفاد کی آڑ میں وسائل کی چوری، استحکام کے نام پر سیاسی دباؤ اور ایک فوجی معاشی کمپلیکس جو اطراف کو نگل رہا ہے، پرانی فریب کاری کو توڑ چکا ہے۔ پاکستان کے زیرِ قبضہ کشمیر کے کشمیری — ایک ایسا لفظ جس کا میں ہمیشہ شدید مخالفت کرتی آئی ہوں اور اب بھی استعمال کرنے سے ہچکچاتی ہوں، مگر اس ملک پر لوہے کی مٹھی سے حکمرانی کرنے والے ظالموں کی حقیقت دیکھ کر مجبور ہو گئی ہوں — حقیقت سے آگاہ ہو رہے ہیں کہ ان کی غلامی بھارت سے آزادی نہیں بلکہ اسلام آباد اور راولپنڈی کی غلامی ہے۔ یہ احتجاج درآمد شدہ افراتفری نہیں بلکہ انصاف سے تھکے ہوئے لوگوں کی فطری آہ ہے۔ جب ریاست ایکشن کمیٹیوں پر پابندی لگاتی ہے، جنازوں پر فائرنگ کرتی ہے اور مواصلات بند کر دیتی ہے تو یہ طاقت نہیں بلکہ خوف کا اظہار کرتی ہے۔

Foreign Office Statement on AJK: A Masterclass in Contradiction

The Pakistani Foreign Office's latest statement regarding Azad Jammu & Kashmir would be amusing if the situation were not so serious.

The statement accuses British MPs and members of the Kashmiri diaspora of interfering in the affairs of Azad Kashmir, while simultaneously insisting that Pakistan respects democracy, freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and constitutional rights.

The problem is that the facts on the ground tell a very different story.

If Azad Kashmir is genuinely autonomous and democratic, why do political decisions of major significance routinely require Rawalpindi and Islamabad's approval?

If freedom of expression is respected, why are political activists, journalists, and critics repeatedly accused of threatening state security whenever they challenge the status quo? Why is the internet and mobile signals completely shut in the AJK?

If peaceful assembly is protected, why have protests in Azad Kashmir repeatedly been met with arrests, restrictions, anti-terror legislation, and coercive measures? Why 26 people have been reportedly killed by the Pakistani security forces in the last 24 hours at Rawalakot, AJK?

The Foreign Office urges others to respect judicial decisions and the rule of law.

That would be a more convincing argument if Pakistan itself had not spent decades facing criticism from international human rights organizations over enforced disappearances, military interference in civilian affairs, restrictions on media freedom, and the use of security laws against political opponents.

Even more remarkable is the accusation that British MPs demonstrate a "colonial mindset."

The irony is extraordinary.

Many of the concerns raised by British parliamentarians relate precisely to questions of democratic accountability, representation, civil liberties, and the relationship between elected institutions and unelected centres of power.

These are not colonial questions.

They are democratic questions.

The Foreign Office also claims that Pakistan believes firmly in non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

This statement would carry greater weight if Pakistani officials had not historically taken public positions on political developments across South Asia, the Middle East, Kashmir, Afghanistan, and numerous international disputes.

Governments comment on international issues every day.

That is diplomacy.

British MPs expressing concern about human rights and governance is no different.

The most revealing part of the statement is what it does not address.

It does not explain why political dissent in Azad Kashmir increasingly appears to be treated as a security issue.

It does not explain why anti-terror laws are being applied against political organisations and activists.

It does not explain why concerns raised by citizens are dismissed as foreign interference rather than answered through transparent democratic debate.

The reality is simple:

Democracy is not demonstrated by issuing press releases.

Democracy is demonstrated by tolerating criticism.

Democracy is demonstrated by allowing opposition voices to organise freely.

Democracy is demonstrated by answering difficult questions instead of attempting to silence those asking them.

The people of Azad Kashmir deserve answers.

And those answers cannot be replaced by slogans about sovereignty, colonialism, or foreign interference.

If Pakistan and the authorities in Azad Kashmir are confident in the strength of their democratic institutions, then scrutiny should not frighten them.

After all, genuine democracies do not fear questions.

They answer them.

A statement issued on Sunday night by the office of AJK police chief Liaqat Ali Malik said four police personnel were martyred when demonstrators “attacked” CMH Rawalakot on Sunday.
Additionally, officials said that at least two people from among the protesters had lost their lives, while dozens were said to be injured. Locals fear that the toll could be much higher. The flow of information from AJK has been curtailed by the closure of mobile data services across the region.
Tensions flared in Rawalakot over the death of a trader, who was allegedly shot during a confrontation with law-enforcers on Friday night.
Initially, his family had ann­ounced his funeral would be held on Saturday, but they later changed their mind and brought the body back to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), apparently for post-mortem examination, and deferred the funeral until Sunday.
