With its gated mansions, Atherton represents the zenith of the American Dream. Just down the road, many of North Fair Oaks’ residents immigrated here for that promise, only to cram families into tiny apartments.

"As the Bay Area’s massive income gap widens, few places more vividly embody that chasm than the street corner locals call the 'tree stop.'"

Sixteen months after enduring far-reaching cuts, Sonoma State's campus life has become what some students simply describe as a "ghost town." Can a new president jolt this once-thriving school back to life? https://t.co/8P0iO1ZRpx

This was supposed to be a festive year at St. Stephen Catholic Church. Yet, there pastor Lee Chompoochan was at Sunday's Mass, encouraging churchgoers to pick up a copy of a recent letter detailing the once-unthinkable: St. Stephen will soon shutter. https://t.co/zwwMn9e83b

During a meeting at a senior center in downtown Vacaville last month, according to attendees and video reviewed by the Chronicle, anti-Muslim activists handed out white sheets of paper comparing Islam to the Antichrist.
An older white man sent a capacity crowd of roughly 300 people into an uproar when he proclaimed that a new mosque “is not going to happen here!” A middle-aged woman held up pages she’d printed out showing Google results for “Islamic terrorism.”
They were all there because the Vacaville Islamic Center is outgrowing the small green house it has occupied at 133 Bush St. for 29 years. By seeking city approval for a self-funded $1.5 million expansion project that would increase their prayer space fivefold, mosque leaders unknowingly made themselves targets and exposed the city’s long-simmering racial tensions.
