Update: suprisingly good. The plot focuses on Washington fighting the French, with a few childhood scenes establishing his character and interest in surveying. The battles themselves stretch from the start of the war to Monongahela, so we see a proper heroic arc.

The battles themselves are great. I'm sure some dramatic license was taken, but the equipment, tactics, etc. are correct and the chaos of an army failing on unfamiliar ground comes through.

The one thing that gets a little heavy handed is the foreshadowing in lines said by and to Washington. They really beat you over the head with him being the future Father of the Country... but the movie released on July 3rd so that was sort of baked in.

There is a romance subplot that goes nowhere because her name isn't Martha, but does serve to put Washington in a room with a man who needs his land surveyed.

I suspect some of the movie funding came from tribal advisors based on how much attention was paid to getting the Indians right.

Young Washington is not as good a movie as The Patriot or Last of the Mohicans, but it is a decent first film adaptation of a story many Americans never learned properly in school, and it loves America. Given the budget I couldn't ask for more.

Go see it.
