Monsieur Kaniki, vous êtes apparu pour la première fois au premier rang de l’AFC/M23, ce 25 février à Bukavu, au côté de Bertrand Bisimwa et de Corneille Nangaa.
Pourquoi avez-vous décidé de vous dévoiler ?
Je ne me suis jamais caché. Je fais de l’activisme sur les questions des conflits et du vivre ensemble en RDC depuis que je suis majeur. Éradiquer la discrimination, l’intolérance et cultiver le vivre ensemble sont des objectifs profondément ancrés en moi.
– Je suis impliqué dans les efforts visant à trouver une solution au conflit qui a élu domicile dans l’est de la RDC depuis plusieurs années par des moyens pacifiques d’abord. L’échec des moyens pacifiques a ouvert la voie à la révolution armée que j’envisage comme dernière ressort :
– ⁠Trois facteurs majeurs:

(1) l’histoire tragique de ma famille dont les membres ont été atrocement assassinés juste pour ce qu’ils étaient. Pas pour les venger, mais pour apporter ma petite contribution à l’avènement d’une société plus juste, respectueuse des droits humains et où règne l’unité et la cohésion entre communautés…
(2) La douleur et la souffrance d’un peuple, les Tutsis, dont la nationalité est toujours contestée malgré le nombre des siècles passés sur le sol de ce qui est devenu la RDC, le refus d’appliquer les lois y relatives avec comme corollaires la discrimination, la stigmatisation, la privation de tous les autres droits, notamment à la vie, à la terre, à la patrie…
(3) la souffrance du peuple Congolais en général, victime d’un leadership corrompu, incapable de répondre aux besoins de la société. Donc j’étais toujours engagé.

Le timing de ma sortie est justifié par le développement de la situation avec la prise de grandes villes de l’ancienne province du Kivu Goma et Bukavu d’où je suis originaire, qui exigeaient une prise en charge autre que militaire. Il était donc temps que je sois là. Il fallait être présent et rassurer ma communauté longtemps meurtrie par le seul fait d’être ce qu’elle est et passer le message aux autres que la solution à la crise se trouve dans l’effort commun.
Votre apparition publique a-t-elle un lien avec la disparition du colonel Makanika, abattu dans une attaque de drone des autorités congolaises et dont on vous dit très proche ?
Non. J’ai toujours suivi de près ce qui se passe en RDC, dans les Kivu en particulier et dans les hauts plateaux du sud Kivu de manière spécifique. Mon engagement actuel, je parlerais plutôt de mon apparition, est juste une réponse à des dynamiques qui changent sur le terrain, invitant la contribution de tout un chacun épris d’un désir de voir une paix durable et inclusive en RDC. J’ai juste décidé de m’engager autrement.
Le reste était véritablement une simple coïncidence et un concours des circonstances.
Quel est votre rôle au sein du mouvement AFC?
Je suis coordonnateur adjoint en charge des finances, économie et développement. ⁠Cofondateur et commissaire politique du MRDP-Twirwaneho. Mon travail relève du contenu de cette double ou triple fonction.
Peut-on vous présenter comme le leader des Banyamulenge ?
Je suis avant tout un Congolais appartenant à la communauté Banyamulenge. Et mon engagement est pour une vie meilleure pour tous les Congolais, peu importe leur appartenance ethnique. J’aspire à une paix qui rassemble tous les Congolais, et cela est inscrit dans l’ADN même de l’AFC.
Par ailleurs, ce n’est pas à moi de m’identifier ainsi. Mon engagement est plus vaste que la seule souffrance des Banyamulenge, ma communauté qui a par ailleurs payé un lourd tribut. Je combats pour une bonne gouvernance, pour les droits de tous les Congolais, pour l’égalité de tous devant la loi

As a British citizen, I am appalled by the level of ignorance of Africa by some of the British politicians. Today I focus on @DavidLammy, the UK Foreign Affairs Secretary, and @Lord_Collins, Minister of Africa. Starting with David on the DRC and Rwanda conflict. David, I was in the DRC and Rwanda exactly when you were there. Unlike you, I visited the cities of Bukavu and Goma (this is in the DRC by way!), which are under the control of the M23 military-political opposition group. In your video following the visits, David, you talked about the humanitarian crisis and IDPs in Goma. While I was there this week, I have interviewed people on the ground and visited the different IDP sites. All IDPs had left the camps before you visited the #DRC. Though you were at 2000km from the IDPs sites. Your video was not representative of your talks with @PaulKagame and @fatshi13. Instead, it patronises and reinforces the deep-rooted moral hierarchy of power and knowledge. Forgive me for suggesting that you played a white colonial aristocrat in black skin. It was no longer David Lammy who used to display and express values of shared humanity using authentic politics.

Secondly, in your extremely partial diplomacy, you referred to the territorial integrity of the DRC, and your position is that #DRC security threats to Rwanda should be resolved diplomatically. I want to challenge you on this, David. The UK government is part of the NATO effort to defend Europe against any potential security threats from Russia. The UK has deployed troops along the EU border with Russia and has established the Operation ORBITAL training mission to Ukraine following the annexation of Crimea by Russia. Questions: Should the UK instead resolve this diplomatically and end the war in Ukraine? Should the UK respect territorial integrity of Russia? Have you been briefed about the many diplomatic efforts between Rwanda and DRC? You rightly suggest political solutions to the conflict but you then give lessons and apply sanctions to one country? David, the underlying factors of conflict in the DRC are all home grown. Continuing to baby-sit the DRC gov because the UK wants desperately a share in the potential natural resource in the DRC is also part of the problem.

On @Lord_Collins, you misled the parliament when asked about the brutal killing of 70 civilians by an ISIS-linked group referred to ADF in Mayba in the territory of Lubero. You suggest this incident was discussed with @onduhungirehe, alluding to ADF being a Rwandan armed group! This ignorance is not only beyond understanding and unacceptable as @YolandeMakolo suggested in the Rwandan official response. It is also racist as it fails to make a difference between who is who between the black people in Africa. There are over 250 armed groups in the DRC. Please get an accurate briefing or read about these groups and conflict dynamics in this region. Some of these groups are foreign, others are DRC government-sponsored, and others operate independently with freedom to kill, destroy, lynch and eat human flesh in Ituli and South Kivu area simply because of ethnic hatred. The dual actor's idea in the understanding of conflict in Africa is not only colonial and racist, but it dehumanises Africans. I call on decolonising UK-Africa relations but this must start with accurate knowledge of Africa and Africans. It is a pre-condition for a meaningful partnership of equals.
