The decision by Zelensky to name a military unit after the “Heroes of UPA” is at the root of the biggest crisis in Ukrainian-Polish relations in decades.
To most Ukrainians today, UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) is remembered for their lonely resistance against Moscow’s rule that lasted until the mid-1950s.
In Poland, UPA is mostly remembered for the horrible massacres that occurred in Volhynia in 1943, one of the darkest pages in Ukrainian-Polish ties.
UPA had heroes and UPA had war criminals in its ranks. Most importantly, they are almost all dead by now. There is a very different war going on today, a war against Ukraine but also a war that threatens Poland.
UPA is not a new issue. Many Ukrainian cities have streets named after UPA and its leaders, and so are some its military units. This was not a reason for major diplomatic crises in the past three decades.
President Nawrocki deciding to issue a public ultimatum to Zelensky, instead of quiet diplomacy, ensured that the Ukrainian decision about the “Heroes of UPA” regiment became irreversible. Ukraine is waging a war with a colonial power that seeks to wipe out its identity and history. Its government wasn’t going to allow another — former — colonial power to issue ultimatums on how to remember the past.
Now it’s not just about Zelensky. All the living Ukrainian presidents who have received the same White Eagle order — Kuchma, Yushchenko and Poroshenko — have returned them to Warsaw.
Now what?
Now Moscow is savoring the best geopolitical news it has had for years. Nobody except Russia benefits when Kyiv and Warsaw squabble.

Killing Polish civilians is wrong.
Killing Ukrainian civilians is wrong.

AK is an important part of Polish history and their national struggle for independence.

UPA is an important part of Ukrainian history and our struggle for independence.

Ukrainians have a different view of history than Poles.

Ukrainians accept that Poles honour AK for their fight against the Nazis and the Soviets. (Not for killing Ukrainian civilians)

Poles should accept that Ukrainians want to honour UPA for their fight against the Nazis and Soviets. (Not for killing Polish civilians)

Both Poland and Ukraine should investigate and reconcile the history together as this period of history is riddled with 80 years of propaganda and misinformation.

Die Ukraine kann die Krym befreien & RUS Versorgungslinien abschneiden. Wir hätten hier auch als DEU viel früher, entschiedener & substantieller militärisch unterstützen und z.B. This is Khasman Mandyk Zhysi. Callsign "Malyi".

He was a Jewish soldier in UPA. During World War II the nazis killed his mother, brother, and sister. He was sent to a ghetto. Instead of giving up in 1943 at the age of 14 he joined UPA.

He fought against the nazis in 1943-1944 to avenge his family. He attacked German strongholds, conducted ambushes, and destroyed German communications.

In 1944 he defended Ukrainian civilians in Khlom from murder by the AK.

In 1945 he 1945 along with several other UPA partisans in Zavydiv and Samovol, valiantly defeated the NKVD.

He was captured by the soviets. Tortured. But survived.

He died August 24, 2013. His last words ""You will gain the Ukrainian state or die in the struggle for it"

This is why Ukrainians support UPA. Because UPA fought and defended Ukrainian freedom from its oppressors.

Stop pretending that UPA only existed in 1943. UPA fought from 1942-1960. Their history has not been properly told.

Kuleba digs deeper into this crisis and is correct in his analysis. Nawrocki exhibits an arrogant nationalist condescension towards Ukrainians that existed in the inter-war era. Like other Poles he justifiably demands Poland be treated with respect and equality by the big European players (UK, France, Germany) while at the same time lhe, like Polish nationalists, looks down on Ukrainians as an inferior and non-European people.
