Energy is an enabler for economic transformation. Therefore, the focus of this US-Africa Business Summit, namely how Africa and the United States can leverage the energy sector through partnership for global prosperity, is welcome.

The Namibian Government has identified Energy as a critical economic enabler for growth, development and job creation. Access to reliable, affordable and clean energy not only powers industries but also presents opportunities for innovation, which is a key element in economic transformation and a true partnership. Indeed, Africa stands at a crossroads, shaping the global energy landscape as a host of vast, but untapped energy including renewable energy resources.

Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, thermal among others can create products such as green hydrogen, which are critical in decarbonising world economies, presenting innovative solutions to fight climate change. Furthermore, the development of these sectors not only reinforce our commitment to the Paris Agreement but also demonstrates the strategic role developing economies such as Namibia hold in advancing clean energy and shaping a climate-resilient future. To unlock the full potential of renewable energy, we need to address funding gaps that hamper development of this sector.

Fittingly, the recent discoveries of oil and gas reserves in our country have generated considerable global interest. Namibia is actively working to strengthen partnerships with stakeholders in the energy sector, focusing on sustainable and inclusive energy solutions to the benefit of the population and the investors.

U.S. companies such as Chevron and ExxonMobil are participating in Namibia’s offshore oil and gas exploration, marking the beginning of a robust bilateral partnership in the energy sector. We view the U.S. as a strategic and technology-driven partner in unlocking our hydrocarbon potential. It is our hope that with advanced technologies in exploration, we will soon reach production stage.

Namibia embraces a competitive open licensing system, enhanced legal certainty, and is in the process of establishing an Upstream Petroleum Unit under the Presidency for close monitoring and shared benefits for all Namibians.

As the current leaders of Africa, it is our duty to shape the future of our people, ensuring that we adopt local beneficiation strategies. Namibia is committed to harnessing natural resources for the benefit of her people. This dedication goes beyond extraction to investing in value chains and industries that generate economic prosperity and energy security. This is a complex undertaking that requires strategic partnerships and collaborative efforts.

We are fully aware that the development of energy infrastructure will require sustainable financing models. It is why we are committed to leveraging public-private partnerships and attracting investments while creating a conducive environment for investors to translate our goals into implementable energy solutions.

In alignment with building an Africa whose development is people-driven, we remain committed to supporting inclusive strategies toward capacity-building, youth empowerment, and technology transfer. Furthermore, we welcome initiatives that shift the role of women from beneficiaries to contributors to energy transformation.

There is also a need for alignment between the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for a greater export market for critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and manganese, amongst others.

Message by Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, on the Occasion of Father’s Day, 15 June 2025

The President of the Republic of Namibia, Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, joins the Namibian people and the global community in celebrating Father’s Day.

In her message, President Nandi-Ndaitwah says:

“On Father’s Day, a special day dedicated to honouring fathers, father figures and their positive influence in society, I extend heartfelt wishes to all the men in Namibia who embrace the vital role of fatherhood with love, dignity, and a sense of responsibility. Fathers are crucial pillars and guardians of families and society, which makes their influence and impact immeasurable.

Through their sacrifices and guidance, fathers shape the character of children and contribute immensely to building compassionate and successful communities. At a time when young boys risk being left behind, the presence of fathers and father figures as positive rolemodels is even more vital.

Father’s Day is therefore an opportunity for the nation to recognise and to appreciate fathers who are present in their families, take their children to school, who nurture and protect, teach and inspire families and communities. We celebrate the hard-working fathers who wake up each day with a commitment to provide for their households and to set positive examples for the next generation.

I call on fathers and father figures to play their part in protecting families and contribute to the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and a crime-free Namibia. It is through strong and safe families where fathers play their part that we can build a safer and resilient Namibia. On Father’s Day, I urge fathers to continue to promote positive fatherhood and ensure that every child grows up with the care, guidance, and support they need to thrive.
