The problem with Europe is not that it wants independence. Any serious civilization should want resilience, industrial depth, secure supply chains, defense capability, energy security, and technological sovereignty.

The problem is that Europe keeps confusing sovereignty with bureaucracy. You have a bunch of Karens who have never built anything but have a bunch of rules on how everything should run. How you should think, how you should talk, what you can and cannot see or hear. How you live, what you can or cannot spend your money on. While taxing you for pretty much everything, because their bad ideas fail over and over again.

Ursula von der Leyen stands on a stage and talks about building a “new independent Europe,” but what exactly are they building? From the outside, it does not look like a technological revolution. It looks like the dystopian reality of Orwell's 1984. It looks like a compliance stack wearing the costume of innovation, and the citizens are trapped in a black mirror that regulates every facet of their lives.

They want to replace dependency on America, but they are not replacing it with superior products or innovation. They are replacing it with politically controlled pet projects that put everyone under the control of a tyrannical, dystopian nightmare and selling it to the public as sovereignty.

Look at space. Europe talks about reducing dependence on SpaceX and Starlink, but Starlink already has more than 10,000 satellites in orbit and a launch machine that keeps scaling. Europe’s IRIS² is still a government-backed promise, years away from real capability, and even when it arrives, it is not starting from the same scale, cost curve, cadence, or operational experience.

That is not competition. That is a committee trying to imitate a company that already won the execution race.

Look at the cloud. Move away from AWS, Azure, Google, and American hyperscalers, but what is the alternative?

In many cases, it is not a true hyperscale cloud ecosystem. It is local data centers, regional providers, compliance wrappers, sovereign-cloud branding, and political procurement. It's equivalent to a data center where you could put your own server from the late 90s to 2010. That may satisfy a regulatory checkbox, but it sets Europe back 16+ years.

That is not a cloud revolution. That is Rackspace with a flag on it.

Look at software. Now Europe wants open-source, government-sponsored alternatives to the dominant American software stack. That sounds noble until you understand how software is actually built, adopted, maintained, secured, integrated, and scaled. You do not beat Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, GitHub, AWS, Azure, OpenAI, Nvidia, Apple, Meta, Palantir, SpaceX, and Stripe by forming another committee and announcing a framework. While trying to take Open Source as a shortcut to build your bureaucratic wet dream. This again sets Europe back over a decade.

Europe keeps thinking regulation is the same as capability. It is not.

Writing rules is not the same as writing code or building a company with technology and software that drives progress. Issuing directives is not the same as building infrastructure. Naming a strategy is not the same as executing one. Declaring “sovereignty” is not the same as possessing it.

This is the same mistake Europe keeps making. Politicians who do not understand technology put themselves above the people who build technology. Then they create laws, permissions, restrictions, reporting duties, risk categories, compliance burdens, data rules, model rules, speech rules, cloud rules, energy rules, procurement rules, and approval systems. After that, they wonder why founders leave, why capital leaves, why developers avoid the market, why AI launches late, why energy costs stay high, why defense procurement is fragmented, and why Europe keeps falling behind.

At this point, Europe isn't just falling behind. It's getting left behind. Manage decline is too nice a phrase. Europe will not be a superpower. It will be a cage for its citizens and a historical footnote for what not to do.

This all comes at a time when AI and Automation are advancing at such a pace that 2 years is equivalent to 10-20 years behind. Most of these things she is talking about do not launch till 2028 - 2035 and are already 16+ years behind. While losing all of the top talent.
