“These people have been not only severely affected, but severely neglected by the National Health Service.”
Dr Charles Shepherd speaking on UCB Radio about the lack of NHS care for people with severe ME/CFS during ME Awareness Week.
What is #MECFS?
A brief overview of symptoms, diagnosis and management based on the 2021 NICE guideline. It’s not being tired all the time, patients have an energy impairment that dramatically limits their activity.
Also, try not to feel guilty if you can’t concentrate on anything but your pain despite the political hellhole we are living in right now. It doesn’t mean you are a bad person. Mental illness is intensely, overwhelmingly preoccupying.
It took three years to force @DWPgovuk to release this paper, which shows how its repeated errors and inaction are causing the lives of disabled claimants to 'spiral out of control'.

The local election results in Norwich - despite the excellent track record of Labour at the City Council - and across the country, make this an existential moment for Labour.
This will not be fixed by another speech, another comms reset, or another reshuffle. The problem is now far deeper than that. Labour is losing the very people and places it was created to represent.
In provincial England, in towns and cities that should be part of Labour’s political heartland, the party’s base is collapsing. Norwich should be a warning. So should the results we are seeing across the country.
We cannot pretend this is a 'bad night', a difficult cycle, or a messaging problem. It is a political crisis, and unless we face it honestly, it risks becoming terminal.
The Prime Minister has reached the point where the question is no longer whether he can recover. It is whether, by staying on, he does lasting damage to Labour’s ability to govern, rebuild trust, and stop the advance of the right.
That is why a timetable for his departure is now necessary. The longer this is delayed, the greater the damage to the party and the country.
Oh it’s brilliant. This is Starmer in 2020
I suggest he watches this on loop
“When you lose an election in a democracy, you deserve to… You don’t look at the electorate and ask them ‘what were you thinking?’ You look at yourself and ask ‘what were we doing?’”

🔥Powerful closing statement from @GeorgeMonbiot on #MECFS
"The fact that this is not one of our very top medical priorities is itself a massive scientific scandal"
A few years ago, CCHR UK was an exhibitor at a mental health event in London. A gentleman who was reading some of the materials said that he knew about CCHR and that he himself was a psychiatrist.
In conversation, he described his own experience of debilitating mental illness and how he had overcome difficulties to achieve recovery. He was acknowledged for regaining his mental health, and was then asked the burning question - how did he achieve recovery?
He proceeded to share the following - he firstly acknowledged his family for their care, attention and understanding while he navigated his mental difficulties, saying he could not have made it through without them. He then said how he had researched and used Asian medicine to assist and achieve his recovery.
His answer presented a rare moment and a playful opportunity to ask a question many have wanted to ask a psychiatrist - did he take any of "his own medicine"? It took a few minutes but he finally answered, saying he had not taken any psychiatric drugs.
That brought up another burning question which was duly put to him - did he think his patients could achieve the same recovery if they received similar care, attention and understanding and if they too were treated with Asian medicine?
And here's the crux of this story. He said yes, his patients could achieve a similar recovery but, as a doctor, he couldn't prescribe Asian medicine because his medical insurance didn't cover him to do so. That's right, his medical insurance was the key factor determining his prescribing habits.
Perhaps professional indemnity insurance providers for doctors could help patient recovery if non-psychiatric treatments were covered. #MDU #MDDUS #MedicalProtection #MedicalProtectionSociety #MPS #MentalHealth #psychiatry #MentalHealthAwareness
Psychiatry has caused a lot of delays and damage in the field of #MECFS. A lot of work needs to be done to undo harm from theories such as patients excessively resting, being afraid to exercise, or perpetuating their illness.
Dr Nina Muirhead, interview in The Times (2020)
Short German TV clip. #MECFS cases have doubled since 2020, many linked to #LongCovid. Patients describe lives wiped out overnight, years housebound or bedridden, and having to choose between showering or playing with their child.
Long COVID doesn’t come out of nowhere. It starts with COVID infection.
The most reliable way to reduce your risk is to prevent getting COVID in the first place. Clean air, well-fitted respirator masks, testing regularly and staying home when sick all help lower exposure and protect your health long term.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists has once again been lamenting the chronic problem of recruitment. The European Medical Journal recently published an article titled Latest Census Exposes Consultant Psychiatrist Shortage in England. It reported one in seven consultant psychiatrist posts are vacant. As usual, the College points to the Government to address the situation. As usual, the College is pointing in the wrong direction.
It would be more appropriate for the College did a root and branch reform of the psychiatric profession and its practices. At present, people don't recover, they are drugged and/or electroshocked, suffer iatrogenic illness and are made into patients for life.
Some of the recruitment campaigns over the years are revealing in terms of what some psychiatrists think of their profession. In 2008, an article was published in the British Journal of Psychiatry. Under the heading "Wake-up call for British psychiatry", it reported “…it is commonplace in the UK to hear non-psychiatrists – and frequently psychiatrists themselves – referring to psychiatrists as not being ‘proper’ doctors.”
Eighteen years later, recruitment problems still exist and the idea that psychiatrists aren't proper doctors hasn't gone away.
Being fully informed about psychiatry is not just a mantra for patients. It's a mantra for postgraduate medical students too.
