A few years ago, Mumbere Miseheri was running a small food business. Today, he has expanded to include a poultry enterprise that started with 100 birds and has expanded to 500.

The turning point came after an entrepreneurship bootcamp, where he learnt how to develop a business plan. He also received a start-up kit and a micro-grant, which helped him scale his enterprise.

His goal is now to reach 1,000 birds and continue growing a business that provides for his family while creating opportunities for others in his community.

Today in Kilifi, as the world marks World Desertification and Drought Day #WDDD2026, IMPACT Kenya is demonstrating that addressing drought and land degradation requires sustained, community-led action.

As the global community gathers in Kilifi to champion land restoration, IMPACT Kenya is investing in one of the most effective tools for building climate resilience: water security.

Through an investment of Ksh. 1,320,000, IMPACT Kenya has installed 10 rainwater harvesting tanks, each with a capacity of 10,000 liters in schools across Kilifi County to improve access to clean water and promote sustainable water harvesting.

The schools are:
📍 Kilifi South Sub-County: Vipingo Central Primary School, Vipingo Secondary School, and Msumarini Primary School.
📍 Kaloleni Sub-County: Tsangatsini Primary School, Madzimbani Primary School, Mkuluni Primary School, Ikanga Primary School, Gandini Primary School, and Pagayambo Primary School.
📍 Magarini Sub-County: Vithunguni Primary School.

Beyond schools, IMPACT Kenya has invested Ksh. 1,657,501.67 in the Karimani Water Pan Reticulation Project in Bamba Ward, Ganze Sub-County.

The project includes an 850-metre pipeline from the Karimani Water Pan to a community water point, a solar-powered vertical multistage pump system, a 5,000-litre storage tank, and communal water kiosks, expanding access to reliable water for local communities.

These investments reflect a broader commitment to strengthening resilience in Kenya's drylands. Reliable water access supports education, protects livelihoods, reduces pressure on fragile ecosystems, and helps communities adapt to the increasing impacts of drought and climate change.

On this World Desertification and Drought Day, IMPACT Kenya reaffirms that restoring landscapes goes hand in hand with securing water. By investing in practical, community-driven solutions, we are helping build healthier ecosystems, stronger communities, and a more resilient future.
