‘Cancelled, no room to write’! How the OS struggled with the number of #PlaceNames on small islands, and the spellings they used! Our latest blog is out! #FairIsle#NorthRonaldsay#Papay https://t.co/fBfhT0koDB
The 2025 @cambtweetasnac Colloquium is on 22.02.2025, on the theme of Sickness and Wellness, with a keynote by our colleague @NorseLass. See the CFP in the tweet below on how to submit a proposal by 10.11.2024.
We’ve had some feedback from @farmerviking about our #Papay Weelie’s Taing #PlaceName blogpost... that there 'are parallels for the ‘hvíla sig’ explanation in Iceland’, which is rather nice! Find out more: https://t.co/LbTFprRWgG
‘Twin islands’, a 'Celtic personal-name', 'St. Adamnan' and/or 'a dam'...? What did we make of the #Orkney island-name #Damsay, and... what were it's eyebrows?! https://t.co/bd5JnqWtQi
Elfin Saddle (Helvella lacunosa) found on a grassy verge today. So-called for its shape! 'Saddle' darker than deeply-furrowed stem. White spores. #Fungi#Shrooms
#wildflowerhour My favourite find of 2024 is Heath Pearlwort (Sagina subulata). An Orkney rarity, only found on 3 north isles, I stumbled upon a clear microhabitat preference it has, & was soon finding it 'at will', including here on Papay for the first time in half a century.
Yesterday's #shroom find is Apricot Club (Clavulinopsis luteoalba). This one is more on the yellow side. Bright white spore print. Found in short, unfertilised grassland #Fungi
Well, the plant I’ve been most pleased to see this year is Bog Myrtle (Myrica gale)! Seen earlier in the week on #Skye with both its yellow catkin-like flowers & red/brown berries! #wildflowerhour#FavouriteFind More: https://t.co/yjedFRQoyS
Pondering the ID of this #shroom! Smooth white convex pileus, slight umbo, buff centre, inrolled wavy pileal margin. No veil. Well spaced off-white notched gills of different lengths. Spore print white. Perfumy smell, but stipe unpleasant when snapped. Under birch.
Is there any ‘Hope’ of finding #Viking harbours in #Orkney… yes it’s yet another a pun… but we think there is... to find out why you’ll just have to read our latest blog! https://t.co/hCdp0iuQHZ
It’s the last challenge this week until #thewinter10 starts & we are asking you to share the plant you’ve been most pleased to see this year! Post your pics for #wildflowerhour this Sunday 8-9pm using the hashtag #FavouriteFind!
